I might be starting Fantasy in the near future, and was wondering what would be a good army to choose from these two?

I've herd that Skaven are really good with there huge blocks of 40 clan rats and hiding there warlords behind them and just tearing up

But I've also herd that dwarfs are extremely good with there high toughness and low unit count to easily command your troops

So which is a good general army to play for a beginner?

Cheers

First the good news, both those armies are good choices.

The best army will most likely depend on your play style. Do you prefer elite or swarm?

Assuming you are truly a 50/50 split between the two I would suggest Dwarfs just because they require less models to build/paint.

well, I loved playing Orks in 40k and having 90+ models to play with in a standard game, but a smaller elite army sounds like a nice change....less moving....lol

If that is the case I would suggest investing in a couple of movement trays and playtesting.

Good news is either way you go you can still use the trays.

Yeah moving is not as much of an issue as it is in 40k due to movement trays. I have both armies. Skaven are a blast to play and play against, they end up blowing themselves up and others, they have very cheap units and very strong ones, IMO it is the most well written army book currently. Dwarves have no magic phase but can counter their opponents very easily, they are very tough, have high leadership and have some very nice war machine options especially when runed up. For starting out I would probably go skaven, helped by this is the availability of IoB sets which are very cheap and a good way to rack up some clan rats and slaves of which you will probably need 150 models just to start

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

150 clan rats, or 150 models altogether?

150 clanrats/slaves is a modest beginning.

I have 150 slaves, 100 clanrats, 60 stormvermin and 40 plague monks, and my horde is a spec compared to some folks on this board.

Still, after all the rares and characters, breaking 6000 points is no problem.
