hello everyone, Im not sure whether or not this thread belongs in the 40k backround section, or here, so Im going to throw caution to the wind and just post it here

So Im starting a 40k army, and I have chosen to run an Iron warriors army, about 7 years ago I attempted to run an Iron warriors army back when there was more of an option to have an army like that and it would have its own rules set in the codex, but ofcourse I only bought what looked cool and totally didnt make it an iron warriors army, I eventually quit for a long time, but since last year Ive gotten back into the hobby except I was playing only WFB which I really enjoyed. but now Im ready to go back into 40k again thanks to wanting another shot at Iron warriors (not to mention all the peer pressure from friends ).

Now after that bit of backround here are my questions

Is there actually a Dark adeptus mechanicum that chaos acquire their tech from? cuz it'd be cool to have a couple techpriest models in my army (Ive read the book "Dark adeptus" before, so Im curious)

and with everything in the new chaos codex being so generalized, which codex would provide a better rule set to represent an Iron Warriors army? Codex: space marines? or Codex: Chaos space marines? (I have both, along with the old chaos codex as well)

and the last question is, if anybody knows of any good homebrew Iron warriors rules for 5th ed. rolling around on the net?

any help is appreciated, hope to hear from you guys soon.

, Moartiki

I would recommend space marines as the huge variety of troops makes it possible to make it more 'siege-ey'.The only thing you really miss out on is defilers. Apparently the 'tyrant's legion' list from FW's badab war part 1 is a good fit.

+1. The SM codex give you access to more siege type weapons (Thunderfire Cannon for example), as well using a Master of the Forge as your Warsmith - more fluffy.

The only downside would be losing things like Defilers (as noted above) and Obliterators, which are an integral part of IW fluff.

You could always model Obliterators and play them a SM Terminatro squads but it wont be the same.

If, however, you are playing friendly games then maybe your friends will let you use Obliterators from C:CSM as an addition or allies to yor army? depends hwo relaxed they are abotu that sort fo thing.

How doesn't C:CSM represent Iron Warriors in the exact same way as the previous one did?

You get Obliterators and Vindicators. Defilers still have battle cannons. You can still cake CSM and Berserkers.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

I think the bland CSM book does an alright job with the Iron Warriors. I don't own a copy, but if memory serves me correctly it's got essentially the same Heavy Support choices as the previous (and much superior, IMO) 3.5 dex, plus Obliterators (correct me if I'm wrong here). However, if you're sure you don't want to use the new CSM codex, I think that the vanilla marines codex would be your next best choice, though you'd lose out on Obliterators, and what are the Iron Warriors without their Obliterators?

As far as 'unofficial' codexes go, my friend simply uses the 3.5 chaos codex for his CSM. While not without it's issues, it's a solid book that's very well.

However, that's only an option for my friend because we play in what is essentially a closed group and he has no interest in tournaments. We're okay with it because it fits his style a lot better and allows for a lot of different competitive lists- he has about 6k CSM across 3 different legions, and constantly changes his lists to keep things fresh. I have more fun playing against his everchanging legion lists than the same 2xLash 3xObliterator spam over and over and over.
