Hi everyone, I'm brand-new to Fantasy and just got my Dark Elves army book. I'm trying to stay close to the Battalion contents since I dont have a lot of capital to get started right away. This is what I have so far...

Glad to see you've made your choice and a list. My concern is the 12 warriors, it's really not enough in this edition of big blocks to do much. Since you're new and you aren't jumping into any tourneys I would see maybe proxy them as Crossbow men maybe run 2 units of 14. You can still get away with shooting units in low numbers but for combat you want at least 20 and in larger games 30-40. Or you can drop them and maybe the cold ones if you need the points and add a Hydra, it would be brutal at this points levels about the only thing that can deal with it are Dwarves, Empire and Skaven with their cannons, everything else will likely perish.

Ok, so I'll need more Warriors..

I had a feeling about that, but the Batallion came with that many. I think I have to play with the 2 heroes to make it point legal. 25% Max, right? Still getting used to these rules, haha.

I don't have the Dark Elf book but it is 25% lords and 25% heros not 25% of both. Also if you're looking to possibly save some cash I read you can take one of new dark eldar legs, might be able to get the bitz on ebay and then use the torso and upper half of a cold one rider to make the master. And also for a plastic sorceress you may be able to convert the dark eldar succubus, though I would like to see the spure first.

The master can't carry the battle standard. Because he has 1 ld higher than the sorceress, he has to be the general, and generals can't carry the BSB.

This is incorrect. You can make any character that specifically is not prohibited your general. While your general is most often your highest Ld. character, it is not mandated that it must be.

Edit: Now then, that being said you probably want to reconsider your list if you're aiming for a solid 1k. The Battalion isn't a bad deal, especially if you already have it. As previously mentioned, you can make an adequate Master out of the Cold One Knight champion's torso and head and some legs. The standard Warrior's chain skirt works just fine, but feel free to have fun with it.

I'm not so sure you'll get full use of the Magic phase out of a 1k list, but there's certainly nothing wrong with trying and it would give you a feel for how potentially devastating or lackluster magic can be. I would go with either a Sorceress or a Master, not both at this level. A proper Sorceress or Master will set you back 140-160 points and having both means over 30% of your army is tied up into two T3 W2 characters just begging to be suicide-charged. Since you are shooting for the Battalion box, I'd go the kitbashed Master route if I were you.

I know the Hydra is not in the Battalion box, but if you're playing Dark Elves you'll want to pick one up at some point anyway. Look for a decent discounter or buy used for a price break. I honestly would not make any of the Warriors you have in the Battalion Box into Spearmen. Dark Elf Crossbowmen are fantastic and our best Core choice in 8th edition. People are jealous of our pincushion firepower so don't be afraid to use it. It usually won't make a world of difference in a single volley, but it adds up quick and softens up larger targets decently.

If you want to try out a little War Machine hunting, assuming you find yourself against such a thing, you can drop 8 Crossbowmen and the Musicians to make room for 6 Shades. Either kitbash them or use Crossbowmen proxies to try them out before buying.

Certainly valid, but once you give the Master a Battle Standard he can no longer be the General and you're left with only the Sorceress to select from. Equipping the character happens before designating a general.

I did not know that. That certainly changes a lot of things for me if that's true!
