Hope this is the right place to post this... Anyways, I'm looking into expanding my Death Korps army. The two options are as follows - (1) Stormtrooper Squad (2) Veteran Squad w/ Chimera. Since it's Death Korps I'm limited to what Forge World give me model-wise. But the question is - which is more worth it? I haven't played alot of games recently with Imperial Guard, let alone with Veterans or Stormtroopers so I have no idea which performs better. In terms of price, the Stormtroopers come in at £35.75 while a full 10 man Veteran Squad with Chimera would be £40.80 + £20.50 for the Chimera to go with it. In short, Option 1 - £35.75 and Option 2 - £61.30. It's clear from that that the Stormtroopers are better value money wise but I really need to know which performs better on the tabletop.

The Stormtroopers come with a Flamer and Grenade Launcher and the Veterans (Engineers) come with Shotguns but I have the Krieg weapon sprues so I can put Meltas/Plasmas etc. in to replace those if necessary.

Here's the Stormtroopers...

Spoiler:

And here's the Veterans (listed as 'Engineers')

Spoiler:

So yeah, which is the better buy? Money wise, the Stormtroopers are, but in terms of gaming effectiveness is it better to go with the Veteran squad in a Chimera? And if so, what kind of loadout should I give them (as I assume keeping them with just shotguns isn't the best?). Like I said, I haven't played 40K for a while let alone with these units (must have been back in 4th the last time I used Kasrkin) so I am totally out of the loop in terms of how they perform.

So yeah, any help would be appreciated and I hope this is in the right place!

How many points we talking about whats your list look like and how many scoring units you have already? If you already have 5+ scoring units you can consider storm troopers otherwise go for vets.

The only real use I have had over veterans for my Kasrkin has been rerolling the deep strike result when I am dropping a boatload of AP3 lasguns on long fangs, dark reapers, or MEQs. In almost every other situation the veterans will serve you better, which I find sad, I love the Kasrkin models.

Being Forge World, I kinda have to roll with what they give me (the Flamers and Grenade Launchers etc.) so I don't have much choice in those departments. But yeah, this is the main bulk of the force I field. I took this from my army list I have on my computer just of what I have (helps to make army lists without having to continually check the Codex). I've only put on what I've got built. I still have 2 more Guardsmen squads and Sentinels but I don't count them yet since they haven't even been unpacked. So yeah anyways, here's my list so far.

Hope this helps in terms of finding out which of the two is more useful!

Veterans are a lot better. They're cheaper in points, with the same ballistic skill, have more special weapons, and are scoring.

The only circumstance I'd use Stormtroopers is when I've already filled my troops choices. Otherwise, veterans are better.

be careful about dumping a lot of money on something that won't work.
either convert other weapon options, or reconsider. all GL or flamer of either
isn't going to help you tactially.

Don't worry. I can change their flamers etc. using the Krieg weapon sets.

I personally would say stormtroopers, you've already got a lot of troops. I personally run a minimum-sized squad with 2x melta, it comes in at 105 points. Take Arial Assault and you have extremely precise melta death.

What people need to realize is that Stormtroopers and Veterans do not fill the same role.

Yup. They do two different jobs.

Vets ride in Chimerae and bring a bunch of special weapons. They shoot more efficiently against most targets, for fewer points, and are Scoring.

Stormtroopers Deep Strike or Infiltrate (or Outflank) to deliver their guns on target somewhere you wouldn't be able to conveniently drive a squad in a Chimera. Stormtroopers also have AP3 basic guns, but those aren't all that impressive in 5th edition, with plentiful 4+ cover all over the place.

Veterans are straightforward to use and cost effective.

If you're not making effective use of the ST's special rules, they're not worth the points.
