This is how i make the best cheapest customizable trays.

Go to and modelling shop, they carry them
All you need is plasti card
and L shaped plasti beams

the 4 plasti beams should be cut off at 45 degreen angle
and they'll glue up to each other + the base plastii card perfectly.

*edit , at first i worry about the base thickness might be too thin ( might cause it to bend )
but i noticed the beams itself is whats keeping it in shape. Now i can buy thinner cards which is cheaper than thick ones.

I use sheets of steel since I magnetize every model and just spray it black.

If you wanna be super cheap, cut the boxes the models come in to size and glue some sprue to the edges. Works every time =D

10 bucks a package, comes with 2 200mmx200mm sheets. I glue sheet metal onto them after to magnetize...

Not quite as cheap as doing it yourself, but a HELL of a deal for 10 bucks. (considering GW prices)

What shivian said. Glue magnet sheeting on the bottom of those and then put them into a metal toolbox for transport, makes setting up an army take no time.

I never understand the ideology behind this. $10 isnt alot for GW's items , even their glue is like $5 sure.

But for $10 to make 4 trays?
or
spend $10 on plastic card + beam and make 20 trays

You just need these http://www.evergreenscalemodels.com/Shapes.htm

Time. I have more worthwile things to do than spending hours on making movement trays. I rarely need more than 4 or 5 anyway and I don't need a set for every army.

Yes, it's time... I made my own last time, but there was a bit of a learning curve and some ended up better than others.

It was also rather expensive, as I went with sheet magnets.

I'm not sure the method I'll use this time, but I may purchase one of the sets to try out the GW ones...

I got these magnetic sheets from Michaels for like $10: http://www.dickblick.com/products/promag-magnetic-sheets/?wmcp=google&wmcid=products&wmckw=61413-1007

2'x1' will last you a while. I put a layer down on the plastic so there is some attraction to my minis which have neodymium magnets on them. I have also thought of putting them on the bottom and putting them in a toolbox so when you go to play they are all ready to go.

Hardboard can be found at most hardware stores for $5 for a 2'x3' piece. Magnetic primer is a bit more expensive - around $15 for a pint can which will cover more hardboard that most of us will ever need.

Cut the hardboard to size and add the magnetic primer. A final coat in a neutral brown or green and away you go.

(Learned from hard experience: Make the movement trays 2mm or so wider than you expect the unit to be. That way you can pick the tray up without jostling the minis.)

This is what I use, in combination with GW trays. That kit is just about the only good deal you can get from The Dub any more, and I'd say 1 set only makes 4 trays if you're making huge trays. I do find that I have to put a good deal of work constructing them - measuring, cutting, discovering they were cut too small (ALWAYS), fixing, green stuffing gaps in the side rails, painting, magnetizing - but it's worth it and I like the end result.

I use some CD cases for my movement trays.. The outside of the CD Case fits 6x7 (42) 20mm models perfect.. jsut need to trim some if you use 25mm bases.
