Craig and Raef are back from Adepticon 2011 and report on all the fun times they had there without Russ. Who claims he's not bitter.
Later, they guys mount up and give a detailed review of Carson City, the euro style board game with a wild west theme. Did we mention there are cowboy meeples?
Oh and Ep 78 also features the return of Words from Wales.
All that and our other not-too-horrible segments including:
- The Hollywood Minute
- What's in the News
- Total Fan Girl
- Do You Ever Notice
- & More

I was the guy that came up with the Sea Monster skit Craig talked about. Sadly he was wrong and I wasn't the winner of the Survive game. :(
If anyone knows who took the video's and said they were going to YouTube them I'd love to see 'em!
Also as a note, the Hollywood minute is jacked up early in. There's a double Rafe. Didn't really effect it much; just a note.

Yeah, the HWM. It's this thing. As Russ will tell 'ya. It's complicated.
It will be fixed erstwhile.

Given the subject matter, I thought you were making a reference to the Star Trek scene where Picard walks in on Data listening to a half dozen pieces of music at once.

I'm about smack dab in the middle of the Carson City review right now, and enjoying the episode. Carson City doesn't sound like my cup of tea (as in, I wouldn't buy it...but, if someone asked me to play I wouldn't say 'no'), but I'm still enjoying the review...but I'm looking forward to Do You Ever Notice.
Not sure why Raef was angry about Carson City. Maybe that's revealed in the rest of the segment, or perhaps it must remain a mystery for the ages.
Really enjoyed the recounting of Craig and Raef's adventures at Adepticon. Sounds like a really great time. Glad you guys had a great time.
I wanted to ask if you guys would consider reviewing a game called Summoner Wars? It's a card game from a relatively new and very small company called Plaid Hat Games. I'm not really fond of card games, but I really dig this game. I picked up a starter.
It has received great reviews, but I'd love to see it (and the company) get some wider attention. I think you guys would like it, too.

I have played Summoner Wars and enjoyed it quite a bit. Now I just got to convince Raef and Craig to give it a try.

Great episode as usual.
I would prefer to be on a ship captained by Picard.
Carson City sounds pretty awesome so I think I'll put it on my buy list.

Another great episode gents and lady (and welcome back Owen)!
In THM, Raef brought up the study where the researchers were suprised that the subjects would rather play with a computer than a turtle.
Really?
I know I risk alienating the Turtle Lobby out there but to a small child a turtle is a dull pet; they don't do much (like the platypus) and when a kid tries to play with them they, well, turtle up. Had they offered the kids a kitten or dog or something maybe I'd be suprised but turtle vs. computer is a asinine comparison.

I heard that the computer that they offered was a unix box with no software, so the turtle had a fair chance.
It sounds like Carson City might become my wife's new favorite game. Not sure that I'll feel the same, but that's what gaming marriages are made of...meeple compromise.
I really wish that I had made it out to Adepticon. I had thought about going, but some things came up. One of the things that I have a hard time reconciling is that this would, in all likelihood be a solo endeavor, as I most of my friends are really burnt out on miniature wargaming, and I don't think the wife will have all that great a time either. "Sure, hon, you'll love the Green Stuff panel." What kind of things are there for non-hobby enthusiasts in case I can get her to go along?
Great havin' Owen back. Like it, I do.

Ha! I thought the same thing when I heard Raef discuss the topic. I thought "Now there's an experimenter with an agenda." I can only how the testing document looked:
Goal: Prove children prefer inanimate objects (aka computers) more than living creatures
Test 1: Dog vs Computer
9/10 children prefer dog... results do not match goal... disregard.
Test 2: Cat vs Computer
8/10 children prefer cat ... results do not match goal... disregard
Test 3: Turtle vs Computer
7/10 children prefer computer ...win!! Publish only results from test 3
Look ma! We're doing science!
I feel like these folks may work for Aperture Science.
P.S. They should have tried the iPad that might have beat the cat.

I think I'd take a companion cube over a turtle, but I may be biased.

Loved the Adepticon review, and looking forward to the "Carson City" review (haven't finished the podcast yet). Keep up the good work from one who's been a touch intimidated to post (you are, after all, Internet Celebrities).

"I have concluded through careful empirical analysis and much thought that somebody is looking out for me, keeping track of what I think about things, forgiving me when I do less than I ought, giving me strength to shoot for more than I think I am capable of. I believe they know everything that I do and think, and they still love me. And I’ve concluded, after careful consideration, that this person keeping score is me." -Adam Savage |

Yeah, Picard only wins out if you're talking about acting ability, dramatic presence of character, vocal ability, threatening demeanor, endearing serious persona or confidence in the face of being follicly challenged . . . in ALL other ways, it's totally Kirk all the way.
Oh, and thanks to everyone for your kind words.
As for non-gaming spouses at Adepticon . . . there really isn't anything much. It's not like a GenCon, where people are actively putting together things (like gamer-widow Survivor) for non-gamers to feel comfortable. It's really a Games Day on steriods . . . or crack . . . or you know, whatever illegal boosting substance metaphor you prefer.
