I was playing an Ork player the other day and he had 18 Ork Boy models in behind a wall and my unit could see 12 of them clearly (30 ork boy models total) I shot at hem with marines at 24 inches away. I could only inflict 10 woulds max but my opponent said that because of the fact that more that 1/2 of the squad was behind cover they all receive a save. I was wondering if this is legit. I found the rule for it in the BRB but I felt cheated. Is there a rule or anything that I may be missing?

If over 50% of the unit is in cover then yes they do receive a cover save.

If facing a large unwieldy unit like Ork boys try flanking their cover to deny them a cover save.

Quick correction to the above- it's "at least 50%", not "over 50%". Half qualifies for the cover save.

I think better wording is: if half the unit or more are in cover, then the WHOLE UNIT qualifies for the cover save.

The wording, at least to me, made it sound like only half the unit qualifies for the save.

Ah. Fair enough. The reading you are imputing would be correct if I had written "qualify" as opposed to "qualifies", but I can accept that I could have been clearer.

Kinda makes up for the fact that even though you can only actually see 12 out of the 30 orks...you can kill all 30 with enough shots and lucky rolls .

For reference, see page 22 under "Units partially in cover".

If half or more of the models in the target unit are in cover, then the entire unit is deemed to be in cover and all of its models may take cover saves.

As clear-cut as it could possibly be, IMHO.
