Had an interesting discussion come up during a game this evening.

Situation; GK Techmarine fires his Orbital Strike Relay at a dreadnought. It scatters 10 inches out of his LOS and clips my Razorback and 2 assault marines which are not in area terrain.

Question is, what cover save if any do my units get?

OSR is a heavy weapon, and not a barrage weapon, so cover saves are determined from the firer's location, not the center of the blast and he cannot even see the 'target'. Blast weapon rules don't state what happens when it scatters out of LOS other then the fact that the shot still works. I assume the OSR works the same way as other blast weapons, so a rogue frag missile would work the same way, correct?

Any ideas?

They get the cover save of whatever is actually blocking LoS, as all units that are half or more out of LoS do.

If it is a building they get a 4+, if it is a fortification they get a 3+ if it is a bush it is a 5+, if it is wire mesh its a 6+

You determine cover saves to the unit hit just as you would normally - where the shot scatters to makes no difference.

e.g. you are targetting a squad of 10, 4 of whom are out of sight. They get no cover save because the majority are in the open.

If the shot scatters and hits the four guys who are out of sight it is still just four hits on the unit and the majority are not in cover.

ETA - barrage is different.
