Subject: 40kOrigins Pairs Tournament (June 24, 2011, Columbus, OH) - Missions for critique

2 months ago, posted my Pairs Tourney missions and got some feedback.. and after more feedback and playtesting here is the next round of missions for discussion.
This is for a 3 round Pairs Tournament at the Origins 2011 Game Fair in Columbus, Oh.. there is a $8 registration fee, I think, in addition to convention attendance. There ARE prizes.. both participation goody bags as well as GW box sets and 40k Army Battleforces for the winning teams. Prizes for Best Battle Record and separate prizes for Best Painted Team.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Doubles 40k Tournament Scenarios-
Forces – 1000 points per player, No Named Independent OR Upgrade Characters. No sharing points, (for example one player having 1002 and the other team mate having 998).
Seizing the Initiative is allowed in Game1 & 2 in this Tournament, but not in Game 3.
As far as Army Lists.. GW Codex lists only, using most current version of a codex. Published GW FAQ's from their website are in force, and will be used in this tournament. GW models& conversions only please... if there is a question, please contact us in advance!
Please bring along 5 copies of your army list. 1 for yourself, 1 for the Judges, and 3 for your Opponents if they request.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scenario 1 - Morning Fog
Dawn has come and gone, and there is just grey skies and ever-present misty rain and fog. You can barely see the enemy, and know you need to get past them!
Deployment - Pitched Battle, cannot leave more than 2 units in Reserves, per player.
Special Scenario Rules - Deep Strike, Infiltrate, Scouts
Reserves (all units will arrive by turn 3, automatically)
Everpresent Fog - Lasts ALL GAME. All Units with a BS value suffer a -1 to their BS for the duration of the game when shooting at targets OVER 12 inches away. This is NOT Night Fight, and Searchlights and Blacksun Filter style wargear will not help pierce the mist.
Mission – Modified Annihilation - Kill Points plus deployment zone bonus
Game Length – 5 turns, with a possible of a 6th turn, on a 4+.
Results -
50 point Major Win- Table your Opponents OR get double the Kill Points of the Opponents
40 point Minor Win- Earn more Kill Points than your Opponents
30 point Tie – Equal Kill Points
20 point Minor Loss – Opponents get more Kill Points than your side
10 point Major Loss – Tabled, or Opponents double your Kill Point Total
Bonus Kill Points possible -
+1 for each multi-model Infantry, Cavalry, or Jump unit or Transport Vehicle mobile within 6 inches of Opponents table edge at end of game. Single Model Walker or Monstrous Creature units also count for this, but single model Infantry/Cavalry/Jump units do not.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scenario 2 - Afternoon Danger
Thanks to recent storms, lightning strikes, artillery barrages and instability in the ether, the battlefield is more hazardous than a battlefield normally is. Regardless of this, there are Vital Objectives that your commanders have decided they MUST have.
Deployment - Spearhead, normal Reserves. Team Players deploy in opposite corners of the battlefield, 18 inch zone between each corner area (9 inches from center line), 18 inch diameter (9 inches from center point) in center. (THERE WILL BE A MAP FOR THIS)
Special Scenario Rules - Deep Strike, Infiltrate, Scouts
Reserves (all units will arrive by turn 4, automatically)
Hazardous ground – After rolling to determine First Turn and thus who and where to Deploy, but before actually placing Units or Objectives, each player nominates ONE terrain feature on the board that is not within 6 inches of a board edge. This can be ANY Terrain on the board. This feature is considered Dangerous Terrain for this battle. (4 total features for the Doubles Tournament). These Terrain features will be marked by placing markers on them.
Mission - Modified Capture and Control - 5 Objectives + bonus
After determining which terrain is to be considered Dangerous, each Team places ONE Objective in one of their deployment zones, and ONE Objective in either of their Opponents deployment zone. A fifth Objective will be placed in the center of the table (or as close, terrain permitting), and will be placed first, before the Team Objectives are placed. All Objectives must be at least 12 inches away from any other Objective.
Game Length - 5 turns, with a 6th turn possible on a 4+
Results –
50 point Major Win- Table your Opponents OR claim 5 or more Objectives
40 point Minor Win- Claim more Objectives than your Opponents
30 point Tie – Equal Objective count
20 point Minor Loss – Opponents get more Objectives than your side
10 point Major Loss – Tabled, or Opponents claim all Objectives
Bonus Objective -
Objectives in your own starting table quarters count as 1 Objective. If you take Objectives elsewhere, they are worth 2 Objectives.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scenario 3 - Night falls
After struggling to bring your opponents to heel throughout the day, by a sudden twist of fate and the fog of war.. your Command elements bump into the enemy Command as night is starting to fall. Don’t let them survive! It is the only way to bring this war to a close!
Deployment - Modified Dawn of War, ALL HQ and no more than 1 Troops unit (with any Dedicated Transport for that Troop unit) from each player's army MUST be deployed, all other units in Reserves.
Special Scenario Rules - Deep Strike, Infiltrate, Scouts
Reserves (all units will arrive by turn 5, as normal)
Night Falls - On turn 3 of the first player, Night Fighting comes into play for the remainder of the game. Starting on turn 4, all units (including vehicles), get a 5+ Cover Save from shooting due to the Darkness, even if they can be seen. If they get a regular Cover Save, they can choose which one they would prefer to get. Template weapons that ignore Cover will also ignore this special Cover Save.
Seize the Initiative is NOT in play. First turn is determined under this special rule:
Too many things to go wrong--- First Turn and Deployment is determined in this mission by rolling a d6 and ADDING the number of units each team has in their total army with an Armor Value, rated as a Monstrous Creature OR having a Psychic Power. LOWEST total goes first. (Monstrous Creatures with Psychic Powers count twice, as would Librarian Dreadnaughts).
Mission - Eliminate the Commander (Modified Kill Points).
Game Length - 5 turns, with a 6th possible on a 4+
Results -
50 point Major Win- Eliminate All Opposing HQ units without losing ANY Friendly HQ.
40 point Minor Win- Eliminate More Total Points in HQ Units than your side lost
30 point Tie – No HQ Units Lost from either side at all OR All HQ Units on the board are lost
20 point Minor Loss – Lose more points in HQ units than you eliminate
10 point Major Loss – Lose All Your HQ Units without eliminating ANY of the Opposing HQ.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anyhow.. that is the 99% final scenario and mission list.. comments and critiques are welcome.. saying "these suck!" is less so.
Also note.. some of these missions and over all rules, were written with an idea of the local meta and ways to break out of the prevalent armies.

Not allowing special characters eliminates deathwing and ravenwing, and by extension, dark angles.
Does each player need to take two troops? Or only one each?
Do peices of dangerous terrain do something additional to things like vehicles, jump infantry, etc. that already treat all difficult as dangerous?
I'm fine with the missions, but it's definitnly going to be interesting to design armies to break them.

Each player needs to take a legal Force Org, so yes, at least 2 troops and 1 HQ minimum per player.
The additional Dangerous Terrain tokens do not add any additional hazards to Jump Infantry or Vehicles beyond normal, although it WOULD be interesting to make those units reroll the DT tests if they initially are safe.
We made the decision to not include special characters from the standpoint of the local meta.. making sure that Eldrad or Mephiston was not ever-present.. for example.

When you say no upgrade characters do you mean like using special characters that aren't independent characters like Telion?

That is correct.. the RTT we are running at the same Origins on a different day, is 2000 points with no such restrictions.

Well, so much for trying to convince my tau friend to team up with me lol.
That first mission I'm betting is suggested to take out the prevalence of IG, but it pigeon holes Tau armies into either markerlight or heavy targeting array armies. Maybe if there was a randomized charge roll added in as well to prevent assault armies from having to not really worry about being shot with any reliability (except any BS4 model). Even with the heavy mist, it might still make sense that you cannot see the enemy as well even within 12 inches, forcing you to roll a d6 to see if you have the range to assault in.
But as the rest of the missions pan out, it seems like the other two missions aren't as against shooting as it would seem (considering night fighting doesn't come in until the final turns of the mission). But its still going to take some convincing for my tau friend to play in the team tournament :-/
Apparently I play pretty differently from the local meta.

These missions seem lopsided towards CC armies.
With two of the missions hurting a shooting armies chances at killing, with -1 BS and the cover save one.
I could understand one -1 BS or cover save one and have another be that the board is difficult terrain, dangerous re-rolls for ex: jump inf have to reroll saved dangerous rolls.
And the third could just be normal, so as to keep the tournament completely fair and not lopsided towards and armies in particular.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Could make the third mission a table quarters where the center is a hole is counted like off the table/impassable for everyone terrain.

Well, the 3rd mission was constructed to be equally hindering, we thought.. giving shooty armies a clear shot for 3 turns and then the advantage switches to HTH..
we are still debating on the "super double dangerous terrain" rule for the 2nd mission..

Except that you don't get three unhindered turns to shoot. Turn 1 and 2 would be fine, as it is nothing more than a normal game. Turn 3 happens, and now I have to make night fighting rolls. Fluffy scenario, but I would much rather take an hth army over a shooting army for this tournament.
If it sounds like I'm complaining, I'm not trying to. I'm simply giving my perspective as a person that has never been in a large scale tournament, and many of these scenarios seem to prevent the most number of people from playing and enjoying it...
Side note: Is the 40k schedule up somewhere?

Outflanking should work like this.. when rolling for table edge, instead substitute your opponents 2 deployment corners up to 1/2 the tableside.. (don't use the 9 inch buffer zone).
Reserves come in either table edge of your own deployment zone, your call.

So it should be something like this:
1-2: Opponent's edge to the left
3-4: Opponent's edge to the left
5-6: Your choice
And you'll use the actual short edge of the board right

I think it would be a good idea to clarify outflanking on the map. Then again maybe I misunderstood the depolyment. Teammates end up being diagonal from each other correct?
