A few months ago, I posted 4 army concepts online and asked you to tell me which one you preferred, the clear winner was the tau commandos idea however I soon realised that while the suit looked fantastic I had serious doubts that an army of them would work, plus white was a nuisance to paint!

It’s proving to be very difficult to choose an army concept to follow up the success of the grot rebellion. So I’ve been experimenting with the 2 army concepts and they’ve been some changes and an additional army concept.

So once again here I am with 3 concepts this time, hopefully I get a much feedback as I did from the last poll, again thank you players of Dakka Dakka for you advice and feedback…

I’ve always been a fan of barbaric humans in sci-fi such as Mad Max, Serenity, Waterworld even games like Fallout. I was originally going to do an army of feral mad max like adhumans using the ork codex so I could use their ramshackle vehicles with small mutants representing grots and a giant Ogryn like warriors as nobs. However they have been several problem in coming up with a suitable nob model plus other issues.

I had thought about doing them using Blood Angel scouts so I could have some flying gunships. However while reading the Grey Knight codex for the thousand sons concept I realised I could use mostly inquisitor units and have henchmen squads as various gangs. At first I didn’t like it but I’ve been thinking about it and it does seem like a better option because the seer conversion possibilities and the fact that the army will include humans representing humans compared to my grot guard and mechanicus daemons.

Here’s a few ideas…
Grand Master: I can finally use that warmaster conversion, with the right weapons modelled. (see image below)
Cortez: The Warmaster’s 2nd in command with underworld connections representing Cortez’ spy network.
Assassins: Bounty Hunters, simple.
Henchmen: I have many ideas for these guys most of which will have a rugged look to them. Warriors: mercenaries, Psykers; Rogue Psykers, Argo Flagellants; mutants, etc.
Chimeras: Armoured Trukks with heavily armoured dozers on the front
Rhinos/Razorbacks: Looted tanks maybe?
Storm Ravens: Seen the Reaver ships from Firefly/Serenity, they’ll look like that.
Land Raiders: Heavy Battlewagon like tanks.

Techmarines and Dreadnoughts are debateable, anyway if I use that codex this army will take on a more mercenaries like feel, which is good cause how else would a post apocalyptic army get from planet to planet.

The only problem is what could I use for death cult assassin, I was thinking about the chaos renegade enforcers?

------------------------------------------

Someone threw this concept at me a week ago, stating since I was after something different to my large numbered mech grots why not try a Khrone Juggernaut army; Convert FW Khrone Berserkers riding Bloodcrushers into battle!
I would use the space wolf thunder wolf rules as it grants more manoeuvrability on the board and I can have the army charging furiously across the board, with the list I’m looking at currently I could field 18 of them supported by 8 dogs and 13 marines.

I suppose they'd look something like this model...

I feel it would certainly turn heads and produce some entertaining facial expressions from opponents at tournaments. Also they’re good for an cinematic ‘armies on parade’ entry having the army tearing towards a guard defence line with the guardsmen fleeing at the sight of the Bloodcrusher charge and have the captain yelling at his troops unaware he‘s about to be cut down by the leading Bloodcrusher!.

------------------------------------------

I’ve finished listening to the Thousand Sons novel and I’m now more eager to create the Scarab Occult the Thousand Sons’ collection of elite psykers.

After reading the codex I’m debating which way to take the army out of the following setups…

Crowe
X4 8 Purifiers
X4 Pre-Heresy Rhinos
X3 Pre-Heresy Dreads

Or go with a Greywing army but instead of modelling terminators have all the units in count as artificer armour on 40mm bases.

Mordrak & 4 Ghost Knights
(Fallen Of Prospero)
Librarian (Pre-heresy Ahriman)
X4 5 Terminators
Dreadknight
(Magnus The Red)
Maybe convert some paladins as Magnus’ chosen.

For the conversions I’ll be using the FW Iron Armoured models as a base for the conversion with tomb king blades on grey knight weapons and replacing the storm bolter with a armoured plate with a scarab or jewel on it.
Regarding armies on parade I'd use a laser cutter to produce a mosaic design and have the army fighting off the foul space wolves inside on of their temples.

Note if you vote for the Thousand Sons tell me which setup you think would look better.

------------------------------------------
So those are the new ideas; I'm keen to do all 3 but I've got both time and money to consider so the winner gets thrown into production first and hopefully done in time for this years 'Armies On Parade' contest, the 2nd will be the following project and sadly the 3rd get dropped, I can only afford to do 4 armies anyway.

Hmmm no offence to Protieus but judging from the stalled Plog either he is not behind the thousand sons or doesn't feel he can make real his vision.

The juggernauts seem to be something of an afterthought and in my mind would just end up as looking like a GW kit/kitbash, lacking in a real personal touch.

I say again the Henchman Kroggs are a winner, Protieus please! Overrule the vote! You know you want the Kroggs! It would be an =I=munda extravangza!

I'd like to see your Thousand Sons-type army, as you've got me considering it as a side project as well! I'd like to make one as soon as possible, and possibly small-game worthy... but it'll be SLOW... much slower than my already snail-like pace for my Eldar. Also, the money consideration, I've got an estimate for FW-base group of 10 marines at $90USD with all the accessories, and around $75-80 USD for a lower standard one. Both estimates probably don't include shipping from the multiple companies to buy the goods from... yowza.

If you (or anyone else) has a plan for going at it more cheaply (but not PH 1K Sons scheme-colored SMs), I'd definitely like to hear it!

Either way, looking forward to it- your projects are always full of flavor and fun to watch.

Oh I'm behind it, I've just had trouble finding the right list that both effective and has the some conversion variety, plus I'm waiting for the tomb kings release for certain bits.

Yeah, but you've got to admit an army of bloodcrushers could look pretty cool and would make a good entry for armies on parade. Besides the grots were a kit bash army.

The thing that stops me leaping into the Kroggs army is skill, armour is easy to do but painting things like human flesh and fabric are hard. I painted up 1 of the warriors a few weeks back and he looked... okay. Painting has always be my weakpoint and it can let my armies down sometimes.

Good points but the problem i see with the thouand sons is those amazing after market kits some company did, it has been done.

I see your point with the blood crushers now, i guess i would put it as my second choice as it is a new idea and certainly not without promise.

That guy's great by the way, the henchman idea also means you can add some scavenged/forgotten tech to them, something i havent seen from the test models. I would love to see what you would come up with for a jokaero counts as. Oh and the reaver 'Junk skiffs' you mentioned could be the coolest thing ever if done right B)

So many people are voting for the thousand sons but aren't helping me with the tough decision between the purifier list with pre-heresy dreads and rhinos or the greywing option with magnus and ahriman.

Bobbing along on the briny North Sea, and Montrose, Scotland when home

I would like to see the pre heresy army up and running. I had considered doing it myseld so seeing someone forge ahead with this would be great.

If Greywing is a post heresy army, I am not sure it would feel right to have both Magnus and Ahriman, as Ahriman was banished by Magnus because of his rubric turning all to dust. He was sent on a quest to learn what Chaos is, I believe.

However Mgnus and Ahriman would work together in a pre-heresy list.

While the perception of Magnus's size changes, I don't really think putting him on a large oval base and proxy-ing him as a dreadknight makes any sense.

You could go for a 'final defense of Prospero theme', dreadknights being victims of the flesh change e.g. Phosis T'Kar swelling with immense power.

The Artificer armour doesn't really fly either as it surely was only introduced post heresy, by loyalist forces.

Sometimes themes can't really be shoehorned into pre-existing lists...

I just checked; according to the Lexicanum, the Ahriman casted the rubric after the horus heresy so he would still been amongest the legion during it, which is good cause I can't think of any other way to represent the ghost knights than dead thousand sons warriors.

Magnus will be converted from the Inquisitor Typus Model and mounted on a 60mm base with his rememberser, the oval base it too big and would look rubbish however I'll keep the oval base for purposes of deep striking and other areas. As for the armour they were a lot of reasons but the main 3 were...

1. It will be a lot cheaper as I will only need 15-20 models. This also means I can focus more on them and add more detail.
2. For the Psycannon I’m going to model the warriors casting a magical projectiles, now terminators get to keep their CCW while the power armoured GK can’t, so I won’t have an unarmed thousand sons fighting in close combat with just their fists, if you get what I mean.
3. I can use the Ahriman model as my librarian with a few tweaks to the model.
