Hi
I'm looking into to paint textured rust and I'm thinking of mixing very fine sand into pva and paint it thinly unto the models before painting them.
Then I came up with the idea to mix in normal table salt into the pva, do you guys think that'll have the desired effect (just a fine, coarse texture)?

I saw this on the home page the other day:
It looks to me just like normal sand. You might try PMing the guy that put that up and asking what his technique is. It looks really stellar. Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh and the guy who put that picture up is named bubber

that's really bang on what I wanted to achieve... really good paintwork there too.
I'm making an undead space marine army, fighting the urge to go berzerk and just feast on the enemies flesh (so codex blood angels), but everyone should look as they've been buried and reanimated. And that landraider is exactly how I want the army to look . Good find

Salt is likely to dissolve in the PVA and might poison the adhesive.
You can use salt for weathering/flaking effects. You prime the tank then spray it with Red Oxide. Then dampen it in patches with water, and drop flakes and granules of sea salt on to the damp patches. It will stick. You spray your main colours over the top. Finally, you wash the tank gently in warm water. The salt will break away or dissolve, leaving irregular patches of red oxide showing through.

I found to work really well is the hairspray- salt/sand , or my personal fav is the paint on "mask" let it fully set and then go paint over it, then either wet it down and rub it off, or just use your thumb. Creates a good layer difference in the two paints, and if you use your thumb shows wear at a realistic point.l

tried to mix pva and normal table salt just now... and the result was a bit unexpected.
first, little glue, much salt:
First the salt absorbed the pva, making it lumpy. I wanted to be able to paint with it so ...
I added more glue, and I promise... that pva turned hard as fast as supeglue. I could lift the whole thing off and it looked very much like snow.
Managed to get some stuck on the tracks of a landraider, so I'll just wait to see if it'll stick properly.
Also saved the old whiskeybox lid I mixed everything in to see if the salt will dissolve or mess up the pva in some way.
If everything works out I've atleast worked out a way to make snow for bases .
Lunchbox: Could you please elaborate your post a bit as I ... just didn't get it ?

Yey I'm famous!!
Sand is the way to go.
A mix of very fine & then a medium would be best.
I painted pva onto the tank then added the sand.
Once dry, I covered the sanded part with watered down PVA mixed with a bit of flow improver (you can use washing up liquid).
Then I repeated the process a couple of times to build up the depth.
I actually couldn't find the sand mix I wanted (stolen from a beach near Barcelona!) so the finish is a bit rougher than I was looking for.

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!! |

ruined the first dread with to coarse sand... looked really fine in my hand but not on the model. Need to find some finer sand.
now I'm testing out the salt-weathering on a landraider Automatically Appended Next Post: oh, how could I've missed the sant/rust thing? really really fun technique... warmy recommend it.
