Hey, I'm looking at either buying or building some of my own terrain pieces for my table. I've looked through a few tutorials but I was wondering if theres any some of you guys have tried for yourselfs, and if so which ones and which ones you'd recommend? Right now I've been doing the hot knife to styrafoam to carve out rocky looking areas. Then painting them, and ideally flocking the top when I have time. I've seen a few random ones that involve straws, toothpicks, cans.. Trying to find all the cheap ones I can, or cheap pre-made terrain pieces as after buying my army its a bit tight now.

I have minimal hands on experience with constructing/painting terrain and realm objects. Just 3D =)

Terragenesis ( http://www.terragenesis.co.uk ) is your friend. It's worth going back to the beginning. There are a lot of cool tutorials.

A good one is also WarFactory ( http://www.warfactory.co.uk/ )

Start with that and you're good for a while. WarFactory has two articles on tools and supplies that are worth looking at if you're planning on doing terrain.

Check out the Games Workshop site, they have some good pointers. Check out all the articles you can on Objective markers. These are great starter projects and usually use very detailed techniques to get the effect across. They can also be reused easily and are easy to transport with your army.

Google and the search engine on DakkaDakka are also your friends if you're willing to browse a little.

Oh i was, i just wanted to see the forum members input on good terrain tutorials. Not to sound snobby but I dont have the time right now to run through hundreds of threads to find some that really appeal to me. I used up all that time browsing army schemes, tutorials, and painting hah!

So far I found a bunch of really good miniwargaming tutorials, with miniwargamer Dave that much like some of the threads I've seen here use lots of cheap materials to get some nice results! I got some pink insolation polystyrene foam and made 4 barricades out of brick blocks. Looking to do one out of cinder-blocks, but I got 1 building up thats 1 tier, and im working on a 3 tier building. So far I've read that buildings can have armor values and roll on the vehicle damage chart? Would each level need to be destroyed or does the whole thing come down ? It confers a 3+ save if they fire at the units, or your totally protected and you just incur possible injuries when that sucker eventually gets destroyed (oh and it well w/ Deffys battle cannon

Somewhere in south-central England.

There are several good books on making terrain. The GW one is pretty good.

Foamcore board is good stuff for making walls and flat roofs.

You can also make a lot of terrain pieces out of household objects...

Dome is made from a Japanese soup bowl. The other piece is a shampoo container.

In 40K an building counts as a vehicle. The rules are very simplistic and could benefit from expansion for real city fighting.

For example, buildings are far more resistant to damage than vehicles and should be harder to destroy. Your idea of attacking each separate level is a good example.

You can do that through house rules.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Nice, I'll post some of the stuff I'm creating. I did some brick walls, based black, drybrushed grey, with some off white highlights. Something seems missing but I can't quite place it.

I'm a big fan of using modified toy buildings. They tend to have alot of great texture already in place and just need some detailng or basing. You can see my most recent work here or on the Terra Genesis site linked above.
