Here it goes:
I've been playing for 5 years with dull, flat models. Why? I have no idea how to make and apply a wash. None.
I was wondering if one of you fine gents on the P&M board could help me?

At it's simplest; Add around 3 parts water to 1 part paint. You can also add a tiny drop of washing up liquid to break the surface tension.
When applying 'less is more' is a good rule - have only a little on your brush and brush the paint towards the recess. This technique leads on to layering and eventually wet blending.

Pics would help. But yes heavily thinned down paint applied sparingly would work. Alternativley GW washes are actually good. (and may even be worth the money!)

GW washes are simply amazing! A must have especially devlan mud and badab black. Try them out, it is worth the money by a long shot. You won't be disappointed.

Delvan Mud, Badab Black and Baal Red are the best things GW have ever come out with!
They are honestly worth every single penny you will end up paying for them.

what shivan said.
I have devlan, ogryn (given to me by a friend), and will soon be getting badab.
I didn't do washes for around the first three years, but learnt how last year. The result are great, especially in picking out facial detail (and especially especiall forge world bare heads)

If you MUST make your own, check out LBursley's wash mix, but like anything which is good quality product, it needs good quality ingredients: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/261541.page

Get you some of this stuff:
Combine it with ink and water and you can make a lot of washes. I usually do about 1 part ink to 5 parts water and 5 parts flow enhancer. Believe me, this looks way better than GW washes.

Devlan Mud wash is talent in a bottle. When applying a wash though, make sure you still have some water on your brush. It'll help stop it from pooling.
