My FLGS is running an 'exploratory force' tournament, using 'apocolypse' rules (meaning no FOC) but total list capped at 500 points. This is my first go at it, using models I actually own.

Any thoughts? I could be facing anything, really, as they are making exceptions to allow superheavies over 500 if that is the only unit taken, and are allowing formations at 500 or less.

This brings 6 lascannons and a bunch of bodies, which I can blob or not as mission scenario dictates.

I planned on simply blobing and MMM! to get to objectives/searchable terrain pieces and letting the lascannons blast whatever is slowing/threatening the blob.

What am I missing?

well, not how i would've done it, but still, a good looking list i suppose.

How would you?

Take an Emperor titan. They say you can take something over if thats the only cap on it take a Emperor titan.

I'm a little hesitant to buy one, and anything over 500 requires approval. Also it would have to be painted up and ready in less than a month and a half.

Also, it doesn't sound like much fun, to me.

I'd much rather take a squad or four and play them than the single unit.

Any other thoughts?

An Emper class Titan has no.model and is over 10,000 points I doubt if they will allow it.

I would take as follows-

Lod Commisar- Power sword, Carapace armour 120pts

Veteran squad 'alpha'- 3 meltas, grenaiders, chimera w. extra armour 190pts

Veteran Squad 'bravo'- 3 flamers, Grenaider, chimera w. heavy flamer and extra armour 175pts

Scout Sentinel 35pts

I played that list at a 500pts tourney once, and i did pretty well. 2nd place, and i rolled lots of 1's on my last game.l

I knew this didn't look right, you're missing an HQ. Swap out one of the lascannon squads and try to deck out the CCS with plasma, and if you have the points to pull it, carapace armor. Also, if you aren't going to add some power weapons, I wouldn't be so keen on blobbing. I tried it a few times w/o power weapons and it never ended well for the guard. So maybe drop the commissar for the extra points? Also the GL if you need that extra point or two, I never found those things to be terribly effective. Sorry I can't give points cost right now, my codex isn't readily available, so I might be low balling the cost of that HQ.

Edit: Also Grigger's list isn't bad at all if you got the models or they allow proxies at the tourny.

Is the CCS really worth it? There is no HQ requirement for the event, so I wasn't going to try and squeeze one in.

I don't understand what everyones fascination is with carapace on chimera vets. Like the squad is in an armored box that they are supposed to stay in. If they get out they die. Why bother wasting the points for useless armor?

because a chimera wont nessessarily e around forever. and lots of armys have AP5 shots, not many have AP4 ready to go. so your squads are getting protecton AND its cheap ish

Heh... if you did a single Blob squad, you could have Yarrick and a Primus Psyker attached to it!

But hey, in a 500pt game, how much mech will you really be facing? That 3 Chimera list with 7 plasma and 3 melta would be pretty solid. I personally would spread out the melta to at least two groups due to that 12" (really 6") range.

The prevalence of AP4 actually astounds me. At 500pts you should be fairly safe from it, but either way, 4+ save or not, your guys are toast if they're out of the chimera. I'd rather save the points and get more guys than I could before. Its not so apparent here, but as an example I helped someone make an IG list 2 weeks ago, and just by cutting upgrades he was able to fit in another squad. At the same time too, trimming the stuff off units doesn't reduce their effectiveness. IMO it makes them better because you don't overestimate their abilities

While vets with a 4+ are awesome, I am thinking that at 500 points more bodies vs shots the enemy has available may make the difference.

Also, it seems from the info they are now posting about this battle, it may really be an apoc game, with 2 sides and one big game, rather than a multiple battle event, so my force may be along side some MEQ/Titan/etc forces, vs the xenos or chaos or something.

Melta spam. One stompa and a Big mek with KFF is around 500P

Well, in that reguard, I suggest (using the 7 plasma 3melta list) that you go 6 melta (two in every unit or 2 units of 3) and fill out the rest with 4 plasma. Gives you 15pts to play with, since Melta is cheaper than plasma. The big thing about plasma is the rapid fire and range. Due to Gets Hot!, I like putting my plasma in my HQ with a medic for a FNP save. Because hey, I assume I am going to roll ones.

If you cut out that last plasma in the HQ and go 6 meltas, your HQ could have the 30pts for a medic and 3 plasma.

Do not underestimate orders from the HQ, specially in a small game (even an Apoc with 4 people is still 1000 vs 1000). Yeah, you can't give your team mate orders, but orders for your own guys is pretty good. Dismounted guys with Move, move, move! keeps them in the fight and Bring it Down helps focus fire on a walker or other tough target.

flamers? seems to me if they get there it's game over

Yeah, flamers. The idea of the tourney seems to be everyone is on the same planet, looking for 'something' which is in some terrain piece somewhere, so I figured there was likely to be a LOT of terrain for false leads, therefore flamers=good. Should I really drop the 50ish bodies for vets?

Not sure how you added that second vet squad, but it comes to 185 by my count, leaving this 10 over.
