So im trying to paint skaven fur and was looking at the GW website

http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?catId=&categoryId=400020§ion=&pIndex=2&aId=13500002a&start=3&multiPageMode=true

Im trying to do the 2nd one. So I basecoat scorched brown, but when i get to calthan brown, the picture looks a bit more orangish.. The calthan brown I have looks like a lighter milk chocolate color. Is my foundation paint not mixed enough? I was shaking it for the past 5 mins.. Or did they add a tiny extra step that they didnt show? Thanks!

Never trust photos for colours - different lighting when they took the photo compared to what's where you are right now can make the same paint colours artificially appear different.

If you really want a more orange hue, I'd add an orangish wash at the end.

For rats, a variety of fur and skin colours looks the best anyway...

ya I want a orangey hue to my fur. How could I achieve a creamy orange?

In general, I do fur via:
- base coat of roughly the colour you want (creamy orange in this case) but slightly brighter (coz the later steps will dull it down a bit)
- highlight/drybrush of a lighter colour, maybe bleached bone and white in this case. the result should be a bit lighter and brighter than the final shade you're aiming for
- wash with brown/black/sepia - this darkens and dulls everything down, and brings out the fur texture.

Experiment with some rank-and-file rats is the best way to find the colours that feel right for you - and even the 'failures' will probably still look good enough to stay in a unit.

Too damn close to the Mason Dixon line.

Sorry to necro this thread a full decade later, but: I took a long break form Warhammer, and I'm just now getting back in with AoS 3.0

I started painting my skaven via the same stage-by-stage guide that tgtony linked, but GW took all of the stage-by-stages down around 2012 and only ever republished SOME of them. Now I'm trying to match my new models to my old ones and I can't remember my method!

Does anyone have a screengrab or copy of that clanrat painting stage-by-stage?

P.S. I'm also in search of their old Stegadon stage-by-stage, for whatever that's worth.
