So, I told myself if necrons ever got an overhaul and got some more awesome put into them then I would pick them up. I also want to do a fairly fun and unique scheme with them and as I already have a few armies that are fairly dark (black or dark green) I kind of wanted to do a brighter color pallet this time around.

Right now I'm assembling some warriors and a monolith to be played with. I'm pretty handy with some green stuff, but I thought some great minds from Dakka could help my brain moving on some creative ideas. First the pallet, I'm going to using the Army painter "crystal blue" primer for these guys, and I will use that color for a majority of color also. The other colors would be a purple wash along with a dark royal purple for shadows and white for the accents and highlights.

Crystal Blue is on the bottom of the page and it gives some examples on some models.
http://usshop.thearmypainter.com/products.php?ProductGroupId=2

A real quick idea of where my mind is heading for color.

The top being the basic colors and the bottom thing kinda how I want to paint the rods (yeah I wanna paint them ) Please forgive my PS skills with a mouse, didn't bring the tablet with me to work today.
So I guess I'm looking for idea for:

* Color scheme changes, tips, ideas.
* Modeling idea - Was thinking some plant life growing on them, barnacles and the such.
* Basing - sea floor or maybe beach, with some of them coming out of the water.

If anyone wanted to know, the idea came from a necron discussion with a friend. These guys would be from a dead planet that had steadily gained oceans over the millions of years as they slumbered and the salt water mixed with their living metal and well.. awesome coolers or something, lol.

... And yes i'm very temped to go go all cheesy and make all the scarabs and tomb spyders red crabs and have my lord with a pirate hat.. but I'll try to refrain

Edit: 5-10-11

Sooo.. I completely changed my concept.. I know, I'm just like that. Acctually I had a dream about Necrons (I'm reading the Ultramarines book, lol) and this idea came to me. A necron lord gazing up at the sky for millions of years, becoming slowly obsessed with the stars themselves....

Anyways, I decided to keep my original idea for a small kill team force, because I still do want to do it.

I did a couple warriors first, then I went ahead and did my first destroyer, who came out pretty good I think. Sorry for the crappy pictures, it's a point and click camera and I can't seem to get the damn thing to focus right.

Sounds... interesting... Only suggestion is to bring in some rust to edges and wear marks.

Yeah I was thinking about looking at how salt water discolors some of the more durable metals, but I didn't think that would rust exactly as they self repair, but if it would look awesome I might have to do it anyways

It would at least help offset the bright colors. Maybe just some scrap metal on the bases?

That might be cool. After I put some darker colors down that blue shouldn't be too overwhelming.. but I'll do a test warrior when the spray comes in.

Things I need to learn to make/sculpt/buy.
- Seaweed!
- Beach bases
- Crabs!
- Barnacles
- ?

.. I've got a big bowl of crabs nooowww..

Did someone say necron transports?

That's going on my funny list of stuff to pull out during ultra serious tourney games...
"What do you mean he doesn't fit the fluff, where in the fluff does it NOT have a lord riding a giant crab into battle!"

I really need some ideas on he bases. I'm thinking beach, but maybe a generic dark sand base that I could dry brush some blues on and add some seaweed..

For the main colours, personally I'd go for antique-look brass/bronze with blue/green verdigris corrosion, coz it's nautical and looks cool. Barnacles and seaweed etc details added on randomly for a bit of variety (would look particularly good on a Monolith). Fluffwise, being underwater for a few million years has caused only cosmetic damage, and naturally they haven't bothered polishing their armour before marching on to enslave the world.

For the bases, i guess beach/foreshore make the most sense, implying they're marching out of an ocean. Gives you lots of options with barnacles and seaweed and crabs and rockpools etc etc

I do like the antique brass look. I've seen a couple examples I would like to replicate, but I'm not sure if I'm a good enough painter to.

Having Necrons awaken from tombs thatare so ancient and forgotten they have long been swallowed by the seas is a great concept. ^^

As for bases I could swing you a few ideas.
* You could go for the tombs themselves, half submerged with acrid sea water and littered with the dead corpses of the Adeptus Mechanicus explorators that unearthed and awakened the crons- so dark marble/metallic floors, collapsed in places and with pools of water. Add the odd skeletal corpse with rusting bionics and your there. Perhaps the occasional bit of broken corral could represent where the tomb's ceiling has collapsed and part of the corral bed that has grown on top of it has fallen in.

* Another idea is to go for the beach as you said. Dark sands could show that the crons are approaching out of the seas at night-with dark shades on the crons and glowing eyes- or as if they are being washed in by the tides. On larger bases you could have the small rock pools could be featured, as could the remains of sea walls, or even the odd hulk of a wooden boat. =/

* Maybe the crons have gotten past the shoal and have made it into a seaside settlement. It could be your run of the mill fishing village or more of a fortress town. Worn concrete pavements, or perhaps sand covered with wooden planks, or just wet cobblestones with a bit of seaweed (and the ash of those killed by the gauss weapons) could work.

* Maybe an Adeptus Mechanicus ocean reasearch facility. Either smooth steel floors or white plastic like ones-reminiscent to the ones on Kamino from Star Wars (though then it'd be more like a tau base). Add the occasional cosmetic floor window-some cracked and with water pooling, even the tentacles of an unseen creature pressing against the glass or other sea creatures getting on with their lives despite the carnage-, and cabling. The usual nonsence. ^^

I think that's all I can post before getting into the spam zone. Hope some of that inspire you a little. =)

Thanks for the comments so far, it's really helping. I'm putting my warriors together right now (damn skinny arms..) and I'll work on green stuffing one and put it up hopefully here soon. Should be a fun project, and I feel like I have some time to get it down real well before the new codex hits.

Those are pretty awesome! Though I don't think I'll mod the crons as much, I'm digging the paint scheme.

Necrons do rust, well not rust exactly as only one metal "rusts" but all metals corode over time just some are more resistant to it. There a numerous examples in the 1st Ultramarines book of "rusted" Necrons so it's cannon that Necrons are affected by the elements.

Good to know. My wife has that book, I guess I need to sit down and read it. I found some good examples of some antique brass painting around somewhere, but I'm having a hard time finding it now

I won't do them together, I'll have a separate kill team army for the first concept, that destroyer is all stars.

Thanks Element, it's actually the first time i've tried blending.

A squad of 3 done now. I'm pretty happy with how they turned out. I'm going for tabletop quality so I can do a couple of minis a night, I'm trying to hold off on my first monolith until I get some warriors done, cuz I've got 60 of those guys to do!
Btw, I figured out my camera a bit, so the focus isn't so horribad, hopefully I'll at least a small light box to take pics in.

I also need an idea for an icon for these guys..

MODS: This has kind of now turned into a P&M Blog, if you could move this over into there I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

My "test" warrior that I did before anything, came out meh, but it let me figure out my sheme and a good way to assembly line them.

A group of warriors ready to be finished tomorrow. At this point they have just been primed, washed, and dry brushed then I added the first base color.

Still trying to imagine a symbol for them, I was thinking a stylized star like the necron symbol, or even a crescent moon.. I'll doodle tomorrow at work.

So after a nice 1st anniversary with the wife, I'll get back to logging my armies progress. As the new dex gets closer I'm a bit weary of what I paint, so for the time being I'll try to get the rest of my warriors done as well as my 2 other monoliths.

So these are my first done warriors. The bright light in the gaming room didn't do much for them and washed out some of the color. I blended each of their shoulders to a purple pink and put stars on them. Since I have lots to paint and these are for playing with, I went with simple details to make them pop, but not too much that it would take forever to paint them all.

And my lord who I spent more time on, blending his cloak and his other bits, lol.

And finally my monolith. This was fun to do and I wasn't real sure how to go about it and not take a whole week to do. I ended up using some foam as a sponge and created several layers of colors before the stars. It came out better than I thought I now I'm not dreading doing two more just like it.

And now a quick shot of the whole group so far. If you are wondering about the terrain, it's the brand new stuff from Gale Force Nine, the battlefield in a box stuff. (Which I'm really happy about )

So things I have, but haven't painted yet...
2 Tomb Spyders
2 Wraiths
4 Heavy Destroyers
50 Warriors
15 Scarab Swarms

What should I work on next?

Oh, BTW, I might be sticking my wifes stuff on here to, in an attempt to get her motivated to paint! She's got tons of Dark Eldar to do and I told her no more buying stuff until she gets at least SOME things painted.
(Oh yeah she's a nerd.. lol.) This is her last year at the games workshop near us for Halloween.. me, my best friend, and her won first, second, and third place.. which we put toward a realm of battle board, lol.
She's a tzeentch cultist : P

Wow, long post, I'm glad I moved this to the P&M blogs.. but before I start (continue?) to banter on.. I'll update a bit later.

Just a bit of an update. Just got a new camera, so taking pictures shouldn't be much of an issue now. Here's my 1000 points, 4 warriors short of full painted. I went ahead and picked up both of the C'tan in metal as I'm one of those weird people who like metal more than resin.
At this point, I think I'm going to hold off buying anything until the codex comes out, but I've still got plenty to paint. 2 wraiths, 2 C'tan, 2 more monoliths, as many more warriors as I can handle (have 40+ more), 3 heavy destroyers, and some more odds and ends.

Any thoughts are always welcome!

For those of you who are interested, got a Canon Rebel T1i. I'm loving it.

P.S. - My wife FINALLY started painting her DE. When she gets 1 completely done that she wants to show I'll take some snaps.

the dots on the shoulders are a bit big and not very "star"-looking. may i suggest another method? rather than painting on each individual one (which i am assuming is what you did here) try putting paint on your brush (preferrably an old one) and flicking it with your thumb. (does that make sense?) the fine spray of little paint droplets would probably look a little finer and more random, much like actual starts. just a suggestion.

on the whole this is a really interesting and unique looking army. i'm looking forward to seeing more.

I'm impressed visually interesting Necrons! Hpefully they'll get a varied codex as well. Don't see why you can't use the water effect base idea on these guys myself. Thin layers of PVA and patience works wonders!.
