Subject: Eldar skimmer questions abound! Star engines, cover saves and small bases

So I have a few questions involving skimmers and jetbikes.
Does using star engines count as moving more than 13" for getting that cover save?
Death or glory melta shot vs flat out skimmer " the rules read "it hits automaticly and still have to roll to pen against the front armor" against serpants' energy fields the melta is reduced to one dice , My question is do i get a cover save for going flat out since its a shot.
I have asked this question before about using small flying bases for jetbikes and now that I realized that dark eldar reavers are supplied with the small bases I believe I should be able to use them regardless if they come supplied with it or not. Check the eldar codex check the BRB. Both have pictures of both bases being used.

No
"has moved flat-out in it's last movement phase counts as obscured" P71

It's a shooting attack and cover saves are not forbidden.

Use the bases that they're supplied with.

Thing is scott, I believe star engines are used in the shooting phase. So, no they wouldn't count to be obscured.
Also note, the FAQ says that you don't get cover saves from Death or Glory attacks.
"Q: Does a skimmer that is moving flat out whilst
performing a tank shock get the 4+ obscured save against
the Death or Glory! Attack? (p71)
A: No."

I was just making it clearer for the OP since your response didn't have much tie-in to the WHY it would or would not be allowed.

Okay thanks guys! But I dont know how you guys transport your skimmers if you have any but if I were to glue them in place all the stalks would break ... Well Im going to get some small bases and keep the bigger ones if anybody gets their panties in a bunch .. i dont see why I cant use them if dark eldar jetbikes which are pretty much the same model can use them.Thats just my PO

You don't actually have to glue flight stands in place; the rules on page 3 of the book(quoted by Scott) say that you do, the rules for skimmers getting immobilized say to remove the stand if it is not glued in place.

If you attach them in a temporary manner (I use magnets) but treat them as permanently attached in game then you will be abiding by the rules.

Why do you want to use small bases instead of the bases that they were supplied with?

Eldar jetbikes have come with at least three different bases over the years, and at least some kits have come with no bases at all.
If one has bikes from a few different time periods then a unit of bikes might well have some on small bases, some on large bases and some on no base...if one follows the raw of using the base supplied with the model.
To make the unit a little more consistent in looks and how they play many people will substitute bases so that all of the bikes are on the same size. Or if the bases arent permanently glued onto the bikes then it may no longer be possible to remember exactly which size base each bike came with.

Why does my eldar army run three fire prisms? Because the rules wont let me use four in (regular 40k). |

I have a question related to this thread, regarding bikes and bases.
The space marine bikes and indeed all other bikes apart from jetbikes I think, come with bases, but every bike I have ever seen has never had a base. What is "legally" correct in that case?
Should I "base" my bikes or leave them without bases? I've left them without for now because it looks better when they're in battle and I wasn't sure about this point.

To fit my bikes closer together in terrain... Do you know how hard it is to get the seer council close enuf to maxmize attacks? Not to mention you cant place a model with such a big base flush against a wall so it makes them all have to spread out further than I would like. ex (LL) big base (s) small base
l(LL)(LL)
l(LL)(LL)
l
l
l(s)(s)(s)
l(s)(s)(s)
Eh not exact but you get the idea

So you have models which were supplied with a large base but want to fit them to a different base because you perceive advantage in it?
I would imagine that most people would have a problem with that.
The rules say use the base supplied. What base DE jetbikes get is not relevant. Bikes only started being supplied with those special bike bases relatively recently. For many years they had no bases (which was especially annoying with ork warbikes that would constantly fall over)

Of the various eldar jetbikes that Ive bought over the years most of them actually have come with the small bases. One group of 3 camewith no bases, and then a couple years later a singleton came with no base and then a year or so later another group of 4-5 had one bike with no base.
Only two bikes have come with the large bases. Most of my bikes have come with small bases.
The large bases *seem* to be intended for the grav tanks (falcons, serpents etc) and the small bases *seem* to be intended for the bikes.
Vypers are a bit more iffy, but then again under the current codex you should never be using vypers anyways
If you use only small bases with your eldar jetbikes no one will raise a question since thats how most of them come. Now if I used the mix of bases and no bases that came with my bikes Im fairly certain that people would complain, espcially since the ones with no bases function quite differently from the large bases.
Also at times can get a little interesting because there are various peg heights that come with the bases. There are two peg lengths supplied with each base, and two different sets of pegs so its four different choices for the height. It *seems* the shorter pegs go with the smaller bases and longer pegs with the larger bases tho.

I would have no problem with my opponent using small flying bases for their jetbikes. I have 12 jetbikes, 4 shining spears, and 2 autarchs on bikes all on large bases and its extremely difficult to get them anywhere. It makes them unplayable really. I believe they will release again with small bases at some point, as this is the intended jetbike bases as Dark Eldar have shown.

I dont think most people would even notice unless they are trying to win at any cost, and thats not fun people!
