I know it makes absolutely no difference to the characters that you can have I don't know who to collect. I've liked Salamanders for a long time but I've just started reading the fluff for Crimson Fists and they look really cool, easpecially Captain Cortez. Who do you think is better because I really can't decide!

Well being on brink on destruction and still fighting must make you epic :thumbus:

Plus, they are having red fist for their sigma, who don't like red fist?

Salamanders are not bad also, but having much less background ( even for a former Legion ). But in the end - it all comes down to paint-job. If you like green and dragoons - take Salamanders, and of you like dark blue and red fist - take Crimson Fist.

But my vote goes to CF....

I think the Crimson Fists have a compelling story though some think them a bit 'mary-sue'. I have a full Ultramarines force so I can't do any more blue... please.

The Salamanders are interesting, thought I have trouble with the whole 'radiation causes black skin and red eyes' stuff... minor points I know. They are green though, and that's not blue so a point in their favor.

Now, if you look at the Marine Codex, you'll see they have different traits and leaders that offer different things. See what you prefer tactically.

Salamanders all the way!
I've been playing Salamanders since their Index Astartes almost 10 years ago... back then we were the only Marines immune to Instant Death (mantle of the Salamander) and the whole army had initiative 3.
But nowadays, Salamanders are now a very competitive army with all of the bonus's Vulkan He-stan gives your army.

Brother Coa wrote:Salamanders are not bad also, but having much less background ( even for a former Legion )

I don't know where your coming up with this Coa. The Salamanders have tons of background, much more than the Crimson Fists. The story of Rynn's world and the almost annihilation of the chapter is one of the only Crimson fist stories there are.

Salamanders have alot of tales from the Hourus Heresy all the way up to the 3rd war for Armageddon. Not to mention the fact that the Salamander's have an current on going series of novels and audio books from the Black Library.

But anyway... both are cool chapters. But I will always love the Salamanders best.

It said that "almost nothing is known about them during HH, exept the Isstvan V." And after than goes 3'rd war for Armageddon, that's almost 10.000 years of history...

I am not saying that they are bad ( no SM chapter is ), but when compared to other Legios they have much less background.

I hate to say salamanders because they are so common on the table top but Nick Kyme has really put a shine on them for me. The Salamander series is growing to be one of my favorites. If you could play them a little more fluffy than running Vulcan in every list I think they would be really kool.

Then again Rynn's World was awesome too...

Less than who?

Salamanders are actually supported by BL.
A series of 3 novels ( tome of fire IIRC ), promethean sun ( limited , grrrrr ),an audiobook, small pieces in HH series....
Salamanders had their own rules in a codex : Armageddon. ( got their specific wargear "stolen" like many other ...)
FW: IA 9
Index Astartes IV article like everyone else.

Also not that small coverage by GW,BL,FW.

Would put them into the "medium sized amount of background" category.

Moving flat out..

I came back to 40k a few years ago and built a Crimson Fist army. For tabletop and gaming fluff - in my opinion, it's the best. (Cuz it's old skool.)

I also have recently started Salamanders also (Drop Dreads) They are more competetive and fun because I've got five killer robots running around - and on the table top have a fulff in a different way as in they are searching for Vulkan artifacts.

Like others have said - the hobby is about what you enjoy.

Glad to see that you have decided on the XVIII Legion.

Normally I try to make posts on the background forum from an impartial standpoint. On this particular issue I will be pretty unable to do so, since I play Salamanders.

That being said, if you want originality, I've never actually seen a Crimson Fists army in play. You'd have an advantage because there would still be decals for you, and even the plastic bits that go on, say, a Drop Pod would be usable for you. (Since they include ones for the Imperial Fists which of course could be painted in your colors.)

I like the background on the Salamanders more, personally, and I like their special rules more. That aside, the Crimson Fists special rules are nice as well (as opposed to, say, the Imperial Fists).

And from a purely technical standpoint, I think Salamanders are easier to paint. Red can be a tricky color to get right (although not as hard as yellow). Blue is easier, but I think green is one of the easiest colors to paint.

This is, of course, just my opinion.

Heh, I liked them more when they were the underdog chapter. I played them from 3rd edition, when they had a minidex in Codex Armageddon, giving them a gakload of drawbacks (limitations on every fast attack choice, Initiative 3 for every model) with no real benefits aside from some interesting wargear (Salamanders Mantle... ignoring instant death used to be a Salamanders thing). I played them and I loved it.

I was actually disappointed when they were made initiative 4 in the 3.5ed Space Marines codex. And now with Vulkan, they shot to the top popularity wise simply because he made them really overpowered. I miss the underdogs
