1) Suppose a unit is in cc with another unit and a vehicle, then when calcing the combat result of the whole combat, you count any penetrating hits on the vehicle right? Does this even count is the vehicle has been immobolised so in effect you get free hits (but that you have to pen with) to use in the overall combat?

2) Hard to describe this one but I'll give the example that occured yesterday. I had a wraithlord that had just charged a marine tac squad. I had an avatar behind the wraithlord who was easily in charge range of the squad but the wraithlord was between the avatar and the closest model. Can the avatar still charge the squad?

Thanks guys

You only count penetrating and glancing hits caused against vehicles with a weapon skill. this means you cannot 'win combat' by smashing 5 or 6 immobile tanks.

The Avatar needs to assault using the shortest path possible, that may mean a straight line or it might mean making a corner around other models or terrain. You can still charge the squad.

1)Vehicles have no effect on combat resolution(brb page 63).

Have a rules quote to back that up? I cannot find anything in the "Walkers and assaults" rules(brb page 73) that changes the fact that there is no combat resolution against vehicles.

2)Yes, so long as the avatar can make it into base-contact, while going around the intervening model(s)

Page 73, however, in the section Walkers and Assault in the third to last paragraph indicates vehicles with a WS (walkers) count rolls on the damage table (glances/pens) for combat resolution.

Edit: Here is the quote

"Each roll on made on the Vehicle Damage table against a walker counts as a singlewound for the purposes of working out who won combat"

Ah, hell; I somehow went over the page 6 times before I edited my post with the challenge, skipped that whole micro-paragraph every time

Thank you I knew I had seen it at one point, but was starting to think I only saw it back in 4th or 3rd.

No problem, I ran into this at a tournament so it is burned into my memory!

Changing editions is confusing, I know the rules better now than I ever did in 4th and in some ways I am not looking forward to 6th!

Thanks guys. On 2) does that mean you can charge round a corner and charge a unit that you couldn't see before you declared the assault?

Also thought of another question. As you can tell we had some multiple unit combats last night!

3) Again I'll use an example from last night. Wraithlord and banshees in combat with a tac squad. The banshees struck first and killed 3 marines and the models were removed such that the wraithlord was no longer in contact with any models. Are you allowed to do that and if so does that mean anything for resolving combat?

Thanks again!

3) Deciding who can make attacks is done at the beginning of that round of combat. If the wraithlord was in b2b with the tac marines at the start of the round, he gets his attacks for that round.

2) You don't need line of sight to assault in 40K.

3) You decide who is going to fight before anyone makes attacks.

Scott is right that LOS is irrelevant for launching an assault in 40k.

He and the others are also correct on determining who fights.

To clarify, as page 35 and page 41 tell you, you determine which models can attack which units at the beginning of combat (errata'd in the rulebook FAQ to the beginning of each "round of combat", to make clear that you check again every player turn, not just once when the whole assault initially begins).

Many players mis-read "beginning of combat" as meaning the beginning of the assault phase, but that's wrong. As the sequence on page 33 shows, you don't actually begin a given combat until step 3 of the assault phase- after all units have made their assault moves, and after all Defenders React moves.

When all Defenders react moves are complete, and you pick a combat to resolve, you then check exactly which models are in base contact (or 2" of a model from their unit) with which enemy units, to see who's eligible to attack whom. Once that's determined, you start counting down from Initiative 10 and actually resolving the attacks. You can't lose your attacks because you are no longer in base contact when your turn comes around, though you could lose them if the only unit you were eligible to attack at the top of the round has been completely destroyed by the time your Initiative comes up.
