Being a Space Wolves player I've never played regular space marines (apart from maybe some odd game with the 40k 2nd ed box minis back in the days) so I have no idea how to build such an army. But I recently got an urge to get me some rogue trader minis and build a small Crimson Fists force of somewhere between 500-1000 pts, a little side project to my regular army. I'd like a standard space marine layout that's not necessary competitive but I'm not entirely sure what that means.

So if anyone would like to give me some pointers on what to include I would be really grateful!

At 500 - 1000 I hope you understand your not going to get alot out of sm

That being said start with the basics

Tac squads in rhinos with a missle launcher and ether a flamer or Melta gun

Equip the Sargent with a pf

IMO I love a tooled captain but at your points a libraian is enough to ask

The libraian should be taking null zone for certain and ether gate or avenger

Vanilla marines shoot they don't assault often so utizle that to your advantage

You might be able to get away with a droppod full of stren guard with combi-meltas

If your looking to expand your list include

More troops

Terminators accompanied with a land raider and equipped with lc and th/ss

Predators and Vindicators are welcomed with open arms

Yeah that helps, thanks! I suppose I'll aim for a tac squad or two in rhinos with missile/flamer, librarian, and a vindicator (I find it awesome in small games) or a predator (always liked predators) for starters.

I picture this as a slow grow project, buying rogue trader minis when I get a decent prize/have spare money. The purpose is more to satisfy the collector/painter in me than the gamer.

A question about stern guards, how are those best fielded? Should the whole squad have combi-meltas? Would it be a waste of points to have them equipped pretty much as regular marines and give them a rhino (seems more "Rogue Trader"-eraish)?

IMO I would feild stern guard with 4 combi- Melta and a heavy flamer maybe field a squad of ten and split after a drop pod

I've been playing mostly small points games lately and i love the 10 man tac ML flamer Rhino combo like Looks Infected said, it puts bodies and armor on the field for a relatively small points costs.

That being said this is what ran last 500 pt game and it did well

It did surprisingly well but i didn't even use my PF so i coulda thrown that out.

EDIT: I think thats a pretty basic list that could be easily turned into anything.

Stormcallers - Thanks, that list looks like very much fun! That might just be what I'll aim for (if you don't have any objections)! And not that I would know but it seems quite basic to me! I actually find small point games more fun than large scale battles, I seldom field an army of more than 1500 pts.
