Hey guys, I want to get into Lord of the Rings, but i have no idea where to start. I want to play, as you've guessed, an army themed on Rangers, like those seen at Henneth Annûn in The Two Towers film.

I've never played before, so what books do i need? what minitures do you reccommend? price is no object.

Hiya,

I'm just getting into WoTR as well (as soon as I convince some of the guys at the club to play! ), and am going for a similar Ithilien-themed army.

All you need books-wise is the main War of the Ring book. It covers all the rules, includes all the forces, and generally everything you'll need. Probably the best place to start planning your army, too. So far in mine I've got:

Faramir
Rangers of Ithilien (legendary unit including Damrod and Madril)
Regular Rangers of Gondor
Knights of Gondor
Warriors of Gondor
Gondorian Archers

I'm being tempted by things like the trebuchet, but I'm not sure if they'd fit in If you want to put up a list, I'll be happy to comment, and I'm sure there are others here who are far more experienced in WoTR than me who will be happy to help!

But yeah, essentially I'd say a good starting point is the main book, a box of Rangers, a box of Warriors of Gondor (or maybe knights to get a feel for how cavalry works), and Faramir to lead them. That'll give you a (very) small force that will give scope for some fun intro games, with room to expand later if you like it.

Of course, if you're talking about the Strategy Battle game, I've just realised all of the above is pointless

Looking for fun articles on painting, tactics and wargaming? Are you after a new regular blog to follow? Are you a bit bored with nothing better to do?

If the answer to any of the above is 'well, I guess' you could probably do worse than read my blog! Regular wargaming posts, painting and discussions

If you want an war of the ring army, do as he says. If you dont, I should take the following:
main rule book
armies of middle earth rule book
gondor in flames book
few boxes of rangers of ithilien
hero: faramir
hero: madril
best also a box of warriors of minas thirith as support unit.

Do you want to play WotR or SBG?

I don't play (not often) WotR, so I can only help you with SBG.

Books: Big Blue Book, Legions of Middle Earth (not necessary), Gondor in Flames
Heroes: Faramir, Madril.
Troops: Rangers of Middle Earth (of Ithilien), Warriors of Gondor. (maybe some Osgiliath Veterans)

Hopes this helpes a little.

Yes, I agree with you, Hasharii.

The Osgiliath veterans should be good to include. They are still the same theme, and are good too. They dont cost that much points (they DO cost much money )

I'm not sure wether that is a sword... it's more like a letteropener, really.

If you want to play LoME (which I highly recommend), you'll need some Warriors who aren't armed with missile weapons. Get some Warriors of Minas Tirith, and then maybe sculpt some cloaks on them or something.

He didn't.

Besides, Damrod is useless.

I agree. He is just an upgraded ranger. with a bit might and not much more.

IIRC, he is only 10 points, so that is like a 2 point upgrade for Might, so he'd be worth that.

17 points for one Might? Not worth it.

You should get some WoMT to make sure your amount of bows is 33% of the army. I don't know what you normally play (point wise) but maybe you should post a list for some advice? Cirion and Madril are pretty good. If you really want a ranger-only list you could get some Ranger of the North. They have a special rule that allows you to take 4(or 5, I am not sure) RoME for each RotN you take. The bow limit get's ''removed" if you do that.

Imperial Guard: 1250pt+
Isengard: 1850pt+

Rangers of the North aren't Ithilien though. They are Grey Company (Arnor).

Yeah ok, but otherwise you would have to add WoMT and they don't fit. He wanted an army like the one in the two towers film, and there are no WoMT there either. So it's something Ranger-ish >< WoMT. Or you could ignore the 33% rule and get an OP, unbalanced army Just check if your friends are ok with that.
