Hello fellow dakka-ites,

Necrons are the first army that I started in this game, and I haven't really used them much since the BA codex came out. I was reading through the start of Dash's Guide and got inspired to give the wraithwing another try in a recent game.

It was a pretty awesome game, and I managed to win in annihilation vs. Tyranids no less. A couple of questions came up during the game that aren't answered in the FAQ.

1. Deceiver's deceive power. It's not a shooting attack, so you can run and use it. However, it says it is "used in the shooting phase", so we were wondering if it is usable in both player's phases. I know there are Psychic powers that can be used on either player's turns and was wondering if this was a similar case. Against Tyranids it didn't do much, but it's still something I'd like to know.

2. Monolith's Portal ability. The portal says that it can be used on a Necron unit within 18". I read this to mean that if the unit you want to teleport was out of range, you could pick a different unit as the portal was never actually "used". We played this in my opponent's favor and I had to guess ranges - which bit me in the ass a few times.

1) no, only in the Deceivers shooting phase

2) It isnt shooting, so there is no "using up" of the portal power until it pulls something through, or everyone is out of range.

Nos, that's what I thought about the portal, but why don't you think it is possible to use the Deceiver's power in the enemy's shooting phase?

Because no ability can be used during the other players phase unless it specifically says so

Could you give me a page number for that rule?

Think you would be looking for pg 9, the lower left box called the turn sequence. Notice how everything there says "the player", this would mean the player who is taking his turn since thats how gw defines turns.

Some abilities do let you do certain things on your opponents turn, but those rules are specific exceptions to the general rule on pg 9 where the other player is told to do those specific things.

Why does my eldar army run three fire prisms? Because the rules wont let me use four in (regular 40k).

That would be a good argument against doing it. It just seems a little ambiguous since the very same model has two other abilities that specifically tell you what player turn and phase to use the ability in, where as this one just tells you "the shooting phase" (of which 2 of them are in a game turn), and that left it ambiguous enough for me to be unsure. Thanks, I'll just keep it simple and use it during my turn.
