Some times I just hate my self, and today is one of those times. You see I just got into warhammer 40K and I really liked it, and like so many others I bought AoBR to begin. Well I began to paint with the SM paint set I bought and played a few games and as I said I really liked it, so stupid me I went out and decided to immediately buy the SM codex and a squad of scouts plus some more paints for my SM's. Now I have finally realized the army I actually want to play is the Tau, and I am really mad because I have spent all my saved up 40K money and I assembled the scout squad. I just went last weekend so it wasn't to long ago, but I am not going to return the codex because I feel as though there is no point because I can't return the scouts or the paints. I have thought about trading the SM's I have and the paints and brushes plus a dice cube and the SM codex for cash, but I wouldn't do it for very cheap. I do sort of still like the SM's, but they are just not exactly what I want so please leave your advice. Also I may be getting about a $100 soon.

keep your marines for now and learn how to play. You need to have a very good handle on the game in order to play Tau. Play with your marines some, get a feel for the game, and save some money.

Word. Playing with any army is important to build up knowledge, and hell, you may realize you don't dig the Tau as much as you thought a month down the road.

I'm building up a small SM army, as I did the same, and wanted Eldar.
By playing AS SM, you get to know how to play AGAINST SM.
You can play against yourself, if you get really bored

Paint your marines. Practice on them. When you're confident and know how to play then go onto tau. Alternatively. Sell everything now (not the paints dice or that) but keep the codex. See if you can swap for Tau. Buy stuff online as you get abotu 40% off. For tau 2x battleforce and some heavy support (hammerhead or broadsides) will stand you in good stead.

This exact same thing happened to me. It wasn't long before I abandoned playing space marines and started buying up Imperial Guard kits.
Unfortunately it doesn't sound like that's an option for you. This is a very expensive hobby. If you don't have a job to fund it, you may want to consider getting one.

What happened to the Orks?
you can sell them for the new in box price and make some money as the AoBR set is a huge savings.
keep the marines and get a handle on the game 1st.
then you can sell them at the cost of someone buying them new seperatly(35 for Tac squad, 45 for Dred, 50 for terminators, 15 for the captain, sell the scouts at cost)
this will net you a good stack of dough that can buy you some Tau(I reccomend the Battalion box as it is a great value and actually has a legal army)

I don't know your battle experience, but you should play a friends Tau army a little before deciding to purchase them. They are a little difficult to play since a lot of their wargear helps them in 4th edition and not 5th. My first army was Tau and I enjoy playing them, but it needs an update. I would play small marine lists for now and get a grasp on the rules more. They are the perfect starter army to learn the rules and maintain confidence in the game. As some people suggested try and sell your extra from AoBR and see what you can get from it. Also if you are looking to spend 100 get the Battle Force of Tau, because it isa real good set to start playing your army. I would hold out on the codex and see if you can borrow someones for now because the Tau 5th edition will be coming soon.

the AoBR box is about a 66% discount.
so you sell the marines at the going price for what they are individually like i explained earlier.
$35 for the Tactical squad,
50 for the terminators
45 for the Dred
and 15-20 for the captain.
sell the scouts at the NiB price and you will have a good amount of money to spend on Tau.

Also, shop around. Maybe pick up/borrow off a friend the tau codex and proxy for a few games. I found some of the sites advertised here were beyond awesome. I just picked up a new land raider for almost half price off wayland games. One of the guys at work just picked up 2 tau battleforces for the price of one from them as well.
But learn with the marines first. Get in a few games, and master the rules. Then go to Tau. From what I've seen, Tau are _really_ hard to play and win with. SM... not so much.
Other than that, you might even be able to trade someone in the swap shop your SM for their Tau.

The theory of more money than sense... In studies subjects were confirmed to have more money (£ Sterling, this is proper science after all) than sense. For this study sense was measured in STD/S or Stupid Things Done per Second. The subjects were usually found in higher socio-economic areas of society where generations of no work has actually reversed evolution to the point where the subjects actually believe they are: 1)Entitled to the money they haven't earned 2)Invincible 3)Better than everyone else Ironically this new found instinct seems to have provided the opposite effect to a normal humans instinct as many people begin to resent them and in several cases the subjects have had the s**t kicked out of them. Unfortunately, and for obvious reasons, these subjects don't tend to survive long enough to figure out how to work the internet but the ones that do provide a large sum of reasources for the internet community and its various relations. OT:The advice here is good.

As a tau player I can say they are quite a challenging army ....learning with marines first is not a bad idea. In fact, once I learned to play marines, it helped me dramatically when playing against them.
Perhaps get a tau codex, find some friends who will let you borrow/proxy stuff, and see if they are good for you.
IF they are, then slowly sell off your marines, and slowly replace with tau. Look for deals on ebay, or local shops with sales or online merchants.
Woah...small world.
I just noticed you are in frisco texas. I am in plano. Contact me via pm.....I am more than happy to help you with tau if you like.
