So, I was playing a game against my buddies SM's today, and we got into a heated debate about the following issue, not really a rule, and I have no word in my vocabulary to describe it, so; Issue.

He was behind a piece of cover, completely obscured from view of my vanquisher, and stated he could fire at it over cover.
My response "uh no". Im pretty sure you have to have a LOS unless it's a hunter killer missile.

So naturally, him not listening, I headed over to trusty youtube, and showed him the first video in the list on missile launchers. Well, murphys' law being what it is, the movie was about a Javelin (for those of you that don't know, it's a wireguided missile that flies... you guessed it, up like a mortar round)

Can someone clarify that missiles are a LOS straight shot, and not over the target?

Even Hunter-Killer Missiles must have LOS. Unlimited range does not give you an exception to this rule.

I'm with Che-Vito and Weldrain on this one. You must have LOS unless otherwise stated and real world weapons have no bearing on the ones in 40K.

Even so the javelin requires LoS to get a lock on the target at which you are shooting, but I digress.

In regards to landraiders:

You're getting confused with Seeker Missiles, which do not require LoS, regular Hunter-Killers do.

One thing to remember, real life mechanics have no place in games like 40K (just like physics has no place in D&D)

Just in case you need more than some guys on an internet site, pick up your rulebook and open page 16. Line of sight is explained there, and it's made clear that you need it.

(Ofc some units/weapons might have a special rule that allows you to get by without LOS, but a SM missile launcher isn't one of them.)

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

Thanks guys, it's been real informative.
The seeker/hunter did confuse me, which shouldn't considering I played tau... (who the seekers belong to, if memory serves)
