So I am intersted in starting a fantasy army and I have narrowed down two choices for the fluff and and
aestheics.
Warriors of Chaos ( WOC ) and Orks and Gobbos. (OAG)

As of right now I play eldar/ dark eldar for 40k so I am trying to stay away from low toughness and pointy ears .

I really like the look of the WOC ...alot actually and I hear they are pretty solid and competitive.

As for the OAG new codex new models ( def a plus ) and the idea of running all those models seems both overwhelming( painting is gonna suck) and awesome !
Fanantics swinging here and there goblin magic and watnot .... I actually like the Gobbo models better Can you run all gobbos?

So can anyone break down both armies and tell me the strengths weaknesses and magic capabliities of both.

I've started to get back into fantasy myself with WoC.

I haven't read the new Orc book yet but you should check out Beasts of War's Orc week coverage as it will help a lot:

http://www.beastsofwar.com/orcs-goblins-week/

I do love OAG though, they are very characterful & just plain fun & the new minis are great. I'd be tempted to do a Night Goblin army myself, a nice block of 100 sitting pretty in the middle of the table or on a flank with a Giant for support - but I'm a bit crazy like that

They have some great units & a horde of Black Orcs will make for a fantastic line-breaker unit.

For WoC I can tell you they are insanely cheap to collect (the Battallion has about 600-700pts in it alone) which was a major factor for me selecting them.

They are very competitive and have strong themes, whether you are going for an army dedicated to one Chaos God, Undivided or a mix (I'm doing a pure Khorne army, lots of skulls and fresh blood - thinking of doing snow bases with blood flicked on of course).

Thier weaknesses are in their pts expense but Maurauder units are cheap enough to bulk it out (I plan on having a Horde of 40 myself) as well as a lack of ranged weaponry. I'd say points values are high so you are limited with your choices, although an insane amount of variety more than makes up for this.

Strengths are everything else: Maurauder Horsemen are great Fast Cavalry units, Chaos Warriors are just plain hard & their heroes & magic users are some of the best in the game IMO. I've looked around other threads and many focus on the MoT or MoK with Hellcannons & Warshrines thrown in. Personally I was tempted to do Nurgle as the mark is annoying (-1 to hit for both shooting & in combat) but I felt the theme would have taken too long to achieve how I would like (at least with khorne it just involves skulls, blood and severed heads). All this and they have Giants!

Hope this helps

warspawned pretty much hit the nail on the head for WoC, apart from the chosenstar of cors
But yeah, they are all hard as nails (with Marauders + GW being one of the best Core units around point for point) and hit hard (MoK + Halberd) or survive forever (MoT + HW/Shield).
The Hellcannon is great! As are the variety of Hero/Lord loadouts available.
Dont know much about OaG though im afraid, apologies for that.

Orcs and Goblins are great fun. Pretty random from memory (last codex not new) with animosity and random things happening.

Great thing about them is the sheer amount of models you get for your points. If you can afford to buy them up you can have literally hundreds of goblins even in low pointed games!

And of course the Orcs add the heavier aspect to your army along with the new spider, giants etc etc

dont know much about WoC

but I hear they are very elite, but it's an army I plan on trying in the near future to

I cant remember the exact set-up, but its a large(ish) squad of MoT Chosen Warriors with a couple characters, BSB, magic standard and a warshrine or two for the £+ Ward save (if you can get it).
Or something like that, there should be a couple of examples in the WHFB Army List Forum

WoC are a tough army, one of the most competitive around, especially with the chosenstar (block of MoTz chosen with champion, two shrines and the wailing banner to reroll fear/terror rolls so getting the 3++ ward is pretty much guaranteed). The hellcannon is possibly the best warmachine around (as in dealing a lot of damage AND being able to fend for itself so seding some puny fast cav or stalker unit to deal with it doesn't work).

Orcs are solid middle of the pack, more varied and pretty random but can be competitive in good hands. There's cheap infantry, tough infantry, two types of fast cavalry, a hard-hitting heavy cavalry, three types of chariots, three warmachines, three thunderstomping monsters, the best point-for-point monstrous infantry (vanilla trolls at just 5 orc arrer boyz a piece!) and a great variety of characters (2 kinds of gobbos and 3 kinds of orcs, all coming in big boss, warboss, shaman and great shaman flavours.... and, best of all, squigs

Shame about the new book having culled all the useful magic items and banners except for the shrunken head, but surely WoC will follow the same route once their book is updated.

Been playing Orcs & Goblins for a few years now, they are really the most fun army to play with. Great variety in models and indeed choices. And sure you can go for an an all_Gobbo army, there is actually nothing more intimidating to the enemy than an endless throng of Night Goblins hiding countless Fanatics...
The new army book continues the tradition of random style with Fanatics and the new Mangler Squigs (no model yet )... There are the hard hitters (Trolls, Giants and of course the brand new Arachnaroc) and the Orc boyz can really deliver a good punch. Animosity is a little less of a problem in this edition.
The spells are...well i'm 50-50 about them. There are some that are good but some of the good ones from the previous book have been taken out...
Still I think O&G are a solid option, always.
On the other hand, I've played against Chaos... Hellcannon is a nightmare, and Marauders are a real pain, but at least they fall relatively easy...relatively...so I guess they are also a choice not to be underestimated...
