Hi,

Finished this grey hunter a few weeks ago, but i'm just finishing off a couple more from the same squad. So I thought I'd put this image here to see anyone would be kind enough to share some C&C.

So I will know what good and whats not for the next one's.

Cheers for any feedback.

EDIT: forgot to add, the images are uploaded onto the gallery so if its easer to vote that would be appreciated also, cheers.

I really like the yellow and the red on the shoulder pads. Mind explaining how you did it like that?

Cheers, I'll be happy to.

For the red I start with a mecrite red base.

Then for the first layer of shadow i mix in a bit of dark angels green about 10-15%, just so the colour deepens. Dilute approx 2-3 parts water to 1 part paint.

Blend paint in pushing it into to the edges, reducing area with each layer. 2nd shadow layer is approx 50/50 dark angels green and mecrite red, the paint should be a rusty brown. blend in smaller areas again, just the edge really. Then I think I might have done a final shadow by mixing in a tiny bit of chaos black just for the edges.

For the yellow I start with Iyenden darksun for the base, then use snake bite leather to darken it, again like above I make two mixes one darker then the other. Then I mix sum sunburst yellow into iyenden dark sun to highlight slightly. After then blending I use bit of devlen mud for the edging and also a watered down glase as well, to make it feel a bit dirtyer.

In both cases it a matter of having all your mixes ready and moving between the shades to smooth the transition. Mainly the base colour though. Like after a shadow layer a glaze of the base colour smooths it.

Hope that makes sense.

So do you blend the two shades while it's still wet? I'm not too good with the advanced techniques and only just getting my layering done, but since I have some space wolves myself, I really like this style, might give it a go for the shoulderpads. You done anymore since this one?

Nope, no wet blending. I always wait for each coat to dry. But that takes about second or two. The paint is very thin. Its matter of using multple layers of transparent paint to fade from one colour to the next. Its a similar technique to layering realy, you just use thinner paints and more shades. and rather then starting in you darkest shade you start a at the mid tone and add shadows and highlights. I'm still only learing the technique myself. Practice makes perfect and all that though.

I'm just finishing up my next one should be done today or tommorow. The shoulder pads were hard work as they have decals included in the sculpt so they were more tricky and more time consuming.

Will put it up when its done though.

Cheers for looking though, and I'm glad you like the style.

Nice start, but I think you could improve him a lot by adding some lighter details, as in my opinion he's a little too dark.
That might be just the lighting though. Maybe add a squad marking, or color the eyes

cheers for looking. The lighting is a bit dull so, and i aiming for a dark look so thats probably not helping but I agree I think I might be able to bring some of the details out further. Can definitely make the eyes brighter.

cheers.

Any thoughts on how to improve will be a big help. Or If there is no time for writting please feel free to vote in the gallery, it would be good to see how my paintings ranks.

Cheers for any input.

I really like how you paint your Wolves with a darker, grittier feel. One of my friends recently started collecting Wolves and I'm looking for a decent scheme to get him started; would you mind posting a tutorial on how you go about painting a model, as I showed him these and he really likes them!

Many thanks!
