Work in layers & one part at a time.
If you try to do too much at once you'll either end up ruining the bit you're working on or putting a figure print on a part you've already finished.
Use colour / clay shapers - I use 'firm'.
Use water to help smooth bits out.
Look around for stuff that can be used for making textures - eg pins, both the pointy end end the other end.
Practice makes perfect. You're 1st effort is likely to be crap.
Get some sculpting tools - GW do one but there are so many other shapes and if you buy a set you will only just spend a little more than if you buy the GW one.
I don't know where you get stuff from in the US though - sorry.
