I was taking a look through some old books... cuz I was bored, and remembered once upon a time I had wanted to put together this army, so questions.

Like that says, are kroot mercenaries tournament legal?
Is there actually a way to make them a viable army list?

Unless the tournament organizers specifically state so, no mercenaries are not legal.

Thanks for letting me know, guess my dreams of people going.... "WTF is that?" At a tournament are shot.

But, like I asked before, can they at least be a somewhat viable army?

My thought was filling out the troops and then krootox to back them up with their (slightly) better guns. I know they're problem is going to be armor, especially heavy, which is why i'd give every single shaper melta bombs. They'd all infiltrate as close as possible and they have a very good chance of going first. Anyway, anyone have any thoughts?

You need to have at least 1 FW team too.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Lost in Warp... again

There is a mini-dex out there somewhere (don't know the name) for kroot mercenaries from White Dwarf I think.

If you can lay your hands on a physical copy of the book, it's still a legal codex, though as stated before, the TO has final call as to whether it's legal. Don't get your hopes up.

At a LFGS though, can't see why not. Cheers!

That's the one I was talking about. I've got it and I'm pretty sure that's the one everyone said wasn't legal. Obviously its up to the tournament head though.

Still no one seems to know how to make them a viable army? They have bad anti tank, so I'm trying to figure something out.

Kroot are barely playable in a tau army, and only because they are the only thing the list has that is a somewhat effective speedbumb. Now take away all of the range prowess of tau, especially anti tank, and add even more of mediocre CC ability of the kroot (with some awful kroot shooting), and you can immagine what a kroot mercenary list would look like. Now adding them to another army using allies might make them viable, but its also highly unlikely you would be allowed to use them outside of friendly games. And even then just going with native lists for most books is infinitely better than kroot.

Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

As far as the Kroot Merc list goes, if you want to play it with your buddies there is no problem unless they object to it. Any 2 people can play anything if they both agree to it.

They are not going to be legal at tournaments though.

They are not legal... in gws tournaments. Other tournaments should allow em.

The Chapter Approved Kroot Mercenary army list is entirely legal for fifth edition, but the standard tournament rules that GW posts on their website excludes them as it only allows armies with a full codex. Since most tournament organizers cut and paste from the GW rules, then it means that most tournaments do not allow Kroot Mercenaries. If you put the work into the army, I find it hard to believe that speaking with a tournament organizer beforehand wouldn't grant you an exception. This is for smaller tournaments, mind you. I don't use my Kroot Mercenaries anymore not because I can't, but because the army list has received no updates since third edition. There are many special rules which no longer reference core rules. As an example, Kroot must always consolidate and can see through 12" of forest. These rules no longer matter. The weaknesses that the list already had in third edition has only been exacerbated by mechanized fifth edition. I have been using my Kroot as a count-as army for the past year or so, first as Orks, and most recently as Dark Eldar.

Now, for a game of Apocalypse, I sure as hell am dusting off the old Kroot rules for some nostalgia.

I've seen tournaments allow the Kroot Mercenaries list recently. It's totally TO discretion, but the default answer is no, they're not legal at tournies.
