For making big molds like this the following video might be helpful:

Adam Savage (of mythbusters) made a tutorial on how to make a large silicone mold but using cheap plaster instead of rather expensive silicone for the bulk of the mold.

Is it weird to say that started looking delicious?

Here is a progress shot midway through building. When i casted it, I coated the mold in black primer. This is several of the casts stacked together.

Thanks for the great comments all!

Never worked with silicone before, so what's the purpose for putting the silicone into a vacuum chamber? Are you removing air from the mixture.

you noticed how it pretty much sucked all the air out of the silicone mixture. i guess you could replace this step by letting it rest or putting it on a vibrating plate but i assume this is much faster

good vid!

The process is known as "vacuum degassing." Essentially, by vacuuming the silicone, you can quickly pop all of the bubbles that exist in the rubber from mixing/shipping etc... There are several other methods for removing the bubbles, and as stated, a vibrating table is very popular. One other method which almost always fails to get mentioned is the cheapest (and messiest) which is called "Bomb's Away" where you pour your silicone from high above the mold though a small opening. The thinner the stream, the fewer the bubbles. Good luck with these!
