I'm deciding whether my new mini's should be 12 Lootas or 12 Burnas. Orks have horrible ranged AT except for the Lootas, however I like Burnas because I can melt elite units like even Termie's down to nothing. There's another form of AT that comes in with Deffkoptas which is what I prefer, so that's why I'd like the Burnas instead. Which would you prefer and why? What are your experiences with them?

It comes down to whether you have something to put the burnas in. Trukks are fine, battlewagons are best. You might be saving the wagons for something tougher, like nobz, in which case a trukk would be great as the wagon would draw some fire away from the trukks frail armour value.
Lootaz in my experience haven't performed brilliantly; like with most devestator-type units, the enemy will deploy and manuevre out of range of them if possible. No-one in their right mind would put a rhino or similar chassis into range and LOS of lootaz, as even with a poor BS they still put out enough shots to bother most light vehicles. I do wonder if putting them in a trukk and wazzing them into a better position after deployment is worth a go.

Melting termies is indeed a lot of fun, but how are you going to get your burna boyz that close? Sadly they have no transport options of their own. You can let them ride in another unit's trukk or a battlewagon, but that can be inconvenient and/or expensive.
Unless your list is already full of light AT weaponry, the Lootas will probably give you the most benefit.

Lootas are great for wearing down MCs and mowing down other hordes with good rolls in my experience.
Burnas are quite versitile, the Battlewagon and KFF combination is quite popular and effective, if that tactic falls apart though you still have a unit of power weapons to throw into the assault. Orks on the charge are deadly, throw in those Burna power weapons, they are lethal.
Both are fun, I'd recommend using some good ol' magnets on the arm/weapon combinations. MiniWarGaming did a tutorial on how to magnetize the kit a while back, the vid is somewhere on their site and their YouTube page.

Buy an additional box of boyz, build both using the torsos from there and get a PK Nob in addition. Just be careful, there is a single torso that does not fit with the Burnaz backpack without some work.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

Read the Burna boyz entry. Find the bit about "the burny dance". Laugh. The choice has been made for you
Jokes aside, I'd ask yourself how many armies to you play against that field things like light armour, skimmers, or MC's. I know my daemon gribblies cringe when lootaz turn towards them. If you're having problems with transports (and orks quite often have some issues with them), lootaz can be quite good. It'll take you a few games to get used to positioning them etc.

well, yes, no one in their right mind wants to put a rhino or similar chassis into range and LOS of lootaz. But not every game you get to hold your ground against the horde- sometimes you must move towards the objectives. Come, come to my blob of boyz at the objectives. Step in LOS of my lootaz, it is the only way to get to this objective.
An example of how Dev-O kind of units can be used is from a game of Company of Heroes a pair of mates played once. One of them built a machine gun off the bat, and sent it up the map about halfway and set up in a building. Didn't kill anything all game. Shot at some guys, they just legged it away. Brilliant. The guy who built it was bitching that his strat didn't work, saying the MG did nothing all game. The opponent said the opposite- probably the best move he did all game. The machine gun meant that his units were not going that way, unless they had some way of digging out that machine gun. It created a "you will not go here, or you will Die." zone, and he couldn't do anything- his resources were to busy fighting off the main attack.
A more warhammer version is heavies in necromunda. Sure the big boys/ladies don't clean up every game. But they certainly create a space your opponent does not want to move into. That is their power.
When your opponent HAS to step in front of one or more squads of lootaz to get to the objectives, ask them if they really are happy sitting in cover/out of LOS to the lootaz. Orks are geared towards cc so that 30 Boyz should be able to achieve the same result as a mob of Burnas.
On the other hand, Lootas have decent shooting weapons making them a great unit for providing cover fire.
My vote goes for the Lootas.

It's a tough choice, and my response would be both. If you can only have one or the other, it'll be mainly down to what kind of army you're running, and what your regular opponents will be. Seeing as i have none of this information at the moment, i'd suggest burnas because of their versatility. Make sure you get them a transport though, in my experience a looted wagon works quite well.

Well your kindda right. In some situations you can get the same performance from 30 boyz as you can with burnas. But in others the burnas are FAR superior. Against other hordes, if the burnas are within assault range, they are certainly within burna range. Id rather template hordes instead of assaulting. Nids are a prime example, those 30 boyz might get the assault sure.....but they go last, and since 6+ saves are anything but reliable, youll end up loosing a fair few before you get to attack. Hell it could go bad for you and youd lose the assault.
But if you drop 15 templates on that same nids unit, well, they are going to die, plain and simple. Theres almost no chance of the unit walking away from all those burnas. Now youve still got all your burnas left.
Again situational. OP if you think youve got your AT already sorted out, then try out some burna boyz. Ive honestly thought about making a burna heavy army (3 mobs of 15 *drewls*) just for kicks. Lootas are really an always good unit, even with just 5 per unit, Ive managed to shoot the piss out of units, they can hit pretty much anywhere on a table and all those STR7 shots hurt everything. So try them both, proxy some boyz as either burnas or lootas and see what ones you like more. That way you know who to buy/build.

If i really must choose, take lootas. They are little different to game and they are the spice that keeps game interesting. Burnas have low iniative pws or flamers. They are good too but they need almost full 15 squad to get so far.

Agreed. You can make 1 unit of 5 lootas and if you sit them in the right spot, they will start paying you back for using them. 5 Burna boyz OTOH......good luck with that one
