My opinion: We don't know much about them, except that they lead the Tau Empire. It is a little strange to me that group of people just "pop up" in a middle of great civil war, arrange a peace and then unite the whole race... Something is very fishy about there guys...

I agree, also, note that the Tau call Chaos Mont'au, sounds all too fishy indeed. I'm pretty sure there is something about the Tau history that GW is not telling us...

If I remember correctly they secrete a pheromone to control the other tau, so there was no real persuasion needed more like subtle mind control. They're there and the Tau just thinks they're the greatest Tau they've ever met. Tau lack any real warp presence which basically rules chaos out as they are almost entirely invisible to warp entities. Kind of like lighting a match and comparing it to a spotlight for humans and the sun for the Eldar, not to mention the Emperor himself is probably twice as bright as the sun and gives them free money if they look at it.

Perhaps there was some genetic modification or their quick evolution was thanks to the warp storm that engulfed their planet. I don't think it has been said just how long it was on the Tau side of the storm and time acts differently depending on where you happen to be in the warp at any given time and depending on what the warp feels like doing at the second.

Tau react to Ethereals as humans react to the presence of a Primarch, with awe.
No official information about their origin, no direct information on what their influence is based on, just Imperial rumours.
One source hints at a daring theory not supported by any other source: In Xenology a mad inquisitor is convinced that Tau Ethereals were created by Eldar using a special Xeno organ to create a race immune to chaos. But that book also shows Tau with feet instead of hooves, so caution is advised.

Mont'au is not Chaos but the time of civil war that almost led to the destruction of the Tau race.

They're Eldar.

They're the robed fellas in the first X-Com. Their attempt to push humans around millennia ago failed, and they've found the Tau a more pliable subject race.

To me, based upon the info in the codex (page 5: lights in the sky, P 20: modified organs etc.) they are clearly an engineered race meant to control the tau.

The most fascinating question is; engineered by whom?

No, seriously. Read Xenology. The Eldar took some pheremone crystals from a hive-mindy bug race from the west side of the galaxy, messed with them a bit, stuck them in some Tau, and put them in Tau societies to help them get their gak together and become a viable weapon against Chaos.

To me, their life force is food. and annoying when they have an honor guard.

Blue kings that act like 3 year old wise-men. They are scared of bullets, but they are happy to blow a few hundred people up.
