Subject: Help choosing a 500pt Combat Patrol list! Nids vs SM
|

Death-Dealing Devastator

So at my FLGS theres a 500 pt combat patrol tournament coming up. Pretty much every army is going to be represented. We have like 15 people signed up already. I have two armies i can kit out by the time the tournament comes around, last weekend of June.
force org is
0-1 HQ
1-3 Troops
0-1 Elite
0-1 Fast
0-1 Heavy
no armor with a total armor value of 33
no 2+ saves (no termies yay!)
no models with 3 or more wounds
List 1 Nids:
Troops:
10 Genestealers w/Furious Charge -170
10 Genestealers -140
Fast:
Gargoyles w/ Furious Charge -70
Elite:
2 Zoanthrope brood -120
This is a pretty heavy CC list haha, i'm hoping the 2 Zoan are enough to pop the few tanks i'll be seeing. I'm planning on Infiltrating the FC genestealers. I'm a little scared I won't be able to hurt enough transports with this. C&C very much welcome
List 2 SM:
Troops:
Tactical Squad -170
Flamer
ML
Scout Squad -90
CC
5 Snipers
Fast:
Land Speeder -90
Typhoon
Heavy:
devestators -150
4ML
sarge w/bolter and Signum
this list is a lot more shooty, with plenty (5ML and typhoon so 7 krak shots) to take out armor. However i'm a little scared about their lack of CC and armor, i know devys aren't really "worth it" points wise but i like them, last game my 5 man dev with 2 MLs blew up a eldar transport moving flat out with 5 firedragons in it easy 2 KPs.
Idk which list to pick here, i really want to win this tournament so c&c very much wanted and appreciated!!!!!!

In the space marine list perhaps you could switch the typhoon with a land speeder storm? Gives your scouts much more mobility, and stops deep strike on top of them. Then you could use the extra points to pimp the tac squad out

I would replace the FC on the stealers for poison. Rerolls due to poison ( if their str is equal or better than targets toughness ) mean more rending hits.
2 hive guard might be better for tanks in a 500 pt game than zoeys, as I doubt you will see much AV 14. They have more shots so they are also good at infantry, better range, and you get to hide them from opponents firing as well. They hold their own better in CC than Zoeys as well, but not by leaps and bounds.

@Mech - I was planning on infiltrating the Scouts on an objective or in cover and just leaving them there to snipe, but i like the idea of the storm, never used one before.
@Grabzak - I think i will take Hive guard instead, i won't be seeing av14 really so they will help alot with infantry and without LoS i can really keep them safe, if i change my list to
10 genestealer
10 genestealer poison
10 gargoyle FC
2 Hive guard
that leaves me with 50 points for another troop or a heavy, should i get a regular 10 man termagant brood or a Biovore?

If you switch the typhoon to a storm with a heavy flamer it will allow you to rapidly contest objectives in the last turn, or to torch an enemy squad , which in a 500pt game would be a pretty big loss, especially in an objective game as it would limit their ability to capture objectives.
Another possibility I'd consider would be dropping the tac squad, and replacing them with scouts, bolt pistol and ccw, and using the storm as a transport for this squad. Could provide a long range nuisance to ranged specialists, or armies such as tau. Nothing more annoying than having a squad flamed, then hit with scouts (5 man squad with mentioned loadout= 15 attacks on a charge). Maybe you could put the extra points into a librarian providing some helpful abilities, as I doubt many vehicles will be about, and any that are would be low value, so if I were you I'd be more concerned with swarms and cc specialists

if you absorb the points into one of the existing squads you can keep KP's down. I would play around between a 3rd HG or bringing in a brood lord for one of the stealer squads.
One problem i do see though is you have no synapse to follow your gargoyles and they have a whopping 6 ld. The hg arent as bad about it seeing as they are going to hide in cover and shoot whether they pass the test or not, but the gargoyles are going to be crappy if they fail.
Hormagaunts on the other hand rage when they fail the test and can move almost as fast as gargoyles.
Unless you had an exact plan with the gargoyles like deepstriking and attacking or some such i would drop them and make a hormy squad with all the paoints remaining

Thats good advice Grab, im new to nids and didn't really know what to do with synapse. I like the idea of taking a Hormy squad, and yeah, KP do need to stay low so i will either take another HG, and i have a broodlord model so i might throw him in instead.
Do you think that the Nid list is more competive than the SM list? I'm leaning toward Nids right now because i feel like they can do more, especially if I take a Hormy squad, then thats 3 scoring units with 10 or more models each, plus i can just hide the HG and snipe transports or light vehicles or whatever.

I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to SM tbh, but that nid list looks like a force to be reckoned with if you can keep the stealers alive until they get to CC.

Tournies coming up and i still havnt decided on which. I'm leaning towards nids right now. Some one convince me!
SM list is same, Nids is a little diff
10 termagaunts 40
10 Genestealers 140
10 Genestealers poison 170
3 HG 150
What you guys think? are my nids points right also?
should i just play some games with both lists against each other and pick the better one?
