Subject: Selecting colors for a new army

I am refurbishing my space marines. I wasn't entirely happy with the paint scheme or the fact that I had too many to do anything useful with (30 assault marines.... pared down to 10 now)
I am considering new paint schemes. Below is what I am thinking of doing. I am not sure if I will add a templars cross in white or black, but I want to incorporate a templar cross on either knee or pauldron where possible. I am thinking of separating veterans with a yellow pauldron instead of green.... Comments? I am actualyl quite at a loss as to how to paint my 'rines.
EDIT:
Core colors:
golden yellow
scorpion green
fortress gray

heh, sorry, i accidentally clicked submit and had to go back and edit.
They are vanilla marines in all ways except for the fact that I may have developed a deep romantic connection to combi-weapons when fielded with vulkan. It won't be vulkan, but I will try to create comparable wargear.

Looks pretty good. Its a bit to IG for my tastes, But then I like my marine to be a bit more 'Look at Me'.
Also, I find painting hands and face plates a different coulour really fiddly. But Your probably more dexterous than I am.
Also if you not sure how to do veterans, as youve halved the breastplate, you could do a full half scheme for vets. It would be a bit of work, but halved schemes look great.

For vets I was also thinking golden yellow rims along with a single golden yellow fist. One of the pauldrons would also be checkered green-grey.....
I was afraid of it being too guard-ey, any suggestions then? I want to do a templar theme using green, and I dont want to look like DA or Salamanders.

A gold Hand would be cool, I like that idea.
Personally, I think all green SM schemes look a bit guard like. But if you want to go with green Its would have to be a brighter green so as not to be confused with DA or Salamanders.
I suppose it depends on what colours would go with the greay and the gold if you went for something other than green.

I think the green looks fine but the addition of fortress grey 'washes out' the green and makes the scheme look like a weak colour combination. I'd suggest either going for a darker grey, a black or another colour entirely. Also be careful when putting yellow on such a light green, a dark outline to any symbols or deep shading will help greatly.
I do love the idea of a green templar based marine force though... make sure you post pics of the finished marines!

I suppose I could do a color-swap? Green for emblems and yellow/grey pattern, and darken that grey up. Green decals don't sit to well with me though, so I'm thinking what other color to use.
I've definately bcome comfortable with grey and yellow. (initially id thought of doing orange and purple, but don't have the will to add 6 more paint-pots untill its absolutely necessary.)
I think I like the name "stone templars", and want to use it, but refuse to associate or follow BoW's idea. I'm tempted to replace stone with either mason, rock, ash or basalt.
and thanks for the help so far. I really appreciate it. im nervous about green-black because i want to avoid looking like DA or Salamanders though. I do agree though, it needs to be and will be a darker grey. I thought I wanted to incorporate green, but with the risks I am trying to avoid im wondering if its possible.
If i do end up using green, I'd rather it be a pale one too, to work together with a "stone" theme. I may end up avoiding the imperial guard look by glossing them over at the end.

Well, If you want a stone theme, you could run a sandstone yellow and and stone grey will mossy green trims.

I think you can incorporate green, its just a matter of having a colour combination you are comfortable painting. I had a play on the marine painter and came up with an example; it uses Scorpion Green w/ Dark Angels Green trim, Golden Yellow and a base of Astronomican Grey.
Just a matter of preferance really, paint whatever scheme you are comfortable doing.

I am reserving the yellow helmets for the veterans and sargeants.
Im also tempted to do the half-half split down middle color theme. My comfort is an issue of knowing what I don't want, but not being able to settle on what I DO want, hahaha.
I think I like Crazy Mez's suggestion. I hope to get the first model painted by tomorrow night for inspection.
Definately will be a darker grey, my problem is the greys don't look right on that painter, makes me think of a space wolf.
Again, thanks for the help both of you.
I may yet employ DA green for company denotations. I can't wait to go through this headache again when I reach my terminators.

Well, here are the first test-models...
color is codex grey, with fortress grey highlight, and vomit brown washed with golden yellow. Not what I was going for, but I may like this once it they get gloss.
Iconography will be in tin bitz highlit with gold, and I will probaby use the same grays to paint templar symbols on.

Looks good. Once the details are done it should really bring it together. I like to do a random other colour for eyes. Perhaps a red would work. On my chaos which are Grey and Mordian blue, with brass trim. And ive done yellow eyes.
Also I use Iyaden Yellow base and Whatever the sun yellow is called in citadel paint slang. Take about 3 yellow coats over 1 base.

Miss it on your scheme - don't worry even if GW stops carrying it Vallejo will still have it - like Fiery Orange (or one of those oranges, the Vallejo equivalent is hot orange and citadel stopped carrying their version.
Oh - had an idea. What about taking that yellow main color, adding a drop of scorpy green and a drop of white, and using it for your highlights?

well, heres the problem, the colors on digital dont add up IRL, and it turned out I didn't have scorpy green (aparantly I was lacking a lot to do these guys) so i opted not to use my IG green, or the other greens I'd used previously and no longer liked.
