Is this a silly idea?

Lootas get the upgrade to meks with kmbs for free. What would be to stop me having a unit of 10 meks with kmbs (s8 ap3 assault1) and using them to advance alongside the boyz under cover of a kff? Thus giving me a mobile unit capable of realistically shooting heavy infantry and light to medium vehicles. I know I'd only be hitting on 5s & 6s, but it would be useful for softening up things like 5 man terminator squads and daemon princes prior to a charge from another unit.

I know lootas are a better unit for the points, but I'm thinking of something that can reliably give me ap2.

thoughts?

Sadly, only 3 boys per unit can be upgraded to meks, and the kmbs Get Hot, making them extremely dangerous to the unlucky meks.

#1: you can only upgrade 3 loota's into meks. so that will stop you right their..
#2: meks die when the roll a 1 to hit (gets hot).
#3: its only 24 inch. when you need to shoot at terminators within 24 inch you did sumthing wrong. The should be surrounded by Boyz!
#4: Loota's are far better against all the other possible targets.

Gak, you're right, it is only 3. I must have read it wrong in my excitement.

All-mek units would actually be viable, while mixing them with units that are supposed to attack entirely different targets is not.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

Have to admit, if I could take all mek units then I think I would finally use them (more reliable tank bustas)

Shame I cant, lootas all the way

Meks have the same chance of killing themselves as they do killing the enemy who wisely stays in cover or has a 4+ invul. 1/3 time it hits, 5/6 times the hits wounds, half the time they save those wounds. Kill rate of 5/36. Gets hot 1/6 times, 5/6 times it gets hot, they die. Breaks down to 5/36.

So, is having a gun that kills the owner as often as it kills the enemy (and more often if they have 3++ or cover and go to ground) all that desirable? It doesn't have AP1, so its no better than rokkits at killing tanks. So what is it good for? Killing multi wound T4 or lower models with 2+ armor (so paladin killing... pretty niche role). Any other unit its either not good enough, or rokkits to it better. Add in they fact that you can at most get 3 per unit, which is pretty awful, and you can see why the weapon is not often taken. About they only viable spot to take the KMB in orks is on killa kans, and even then only if you have free points (BS3, but its more costly than rokkits which are nearly as good).

Meks suck, I built and painted mine in case they ever become useful, but they suck a lot.

Meks can be given Rokkit launchas, which has been an interesting suprise when I took them once with Burna boyz to give that unit a little more oomph against AV targets.

If they could take ammo runts it would be worth it, but the only one able to do that is the big mek, and he has a far more important job to do.
