Hello everyone, I had the following issue yesterday on a game against the dark eldar with my space wolves. I had one unit of 7 models 4 of which where inside terrain while the rest where outside of the terrain. In his round my opponent declared assault on the unit , with a unit of incubi. I asked him to roll for difficult terrain, and here we had a dispute because he "knew that if one model can base contact with enother enemy model that is outside of terrain, then there is no need for the entire unit to move through it, they are just getting base contact with the models that are outside the terrain, and of course there is no need for assault grenades if they do so. I told him that the book states that " all models must attempt to get into base contact with as many models of the opposing unit as possible without holding back" and he claimed that the assault move follows the same rules as moving and that he may choose not to roll for difficult neither enter the terrain. They just declare normal move, get base contact with enyone they can as they are not allowed by their move to enter terrain, and they just drow the enemy unit outside the terrain.
We couldn't solve the issue and he just let it go my way in a " ok, whatever, I dont care" manner which ruined the mood generaly.
What do you guys think?

It really depends on the situation.

However, your opponent must follow the 'Moving Assaulting Models' rules on P.34 which states: 'If possible, the model must move into base contact with an enemy model within reach that is not already in base contact with an assaulting model.

That said, his closest model must move into contact with the nearest enemy model, then he would have to move subsequent models according to the rules on P.34

If, given the example above, his fourth model could reach a model in terrain, then he must attempt to move him in B2B with the model in terrain. This, of course, would require a difficult terrain test as normal.

As above.

You can be forced to move into terrain. Clever opponents will use their move to setup such that they dont need to do so, OR you move the assaulting models such that the (in this case_ 4th model to move cannot reach btb with a model in cover - meaning no need to take a terrain check.

Your opponent was trying to cheat.

Just for clarification: Does the unit roll for difficult terrain? Is the initial assaulting model affected by the roll if it does not move through terrain?

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:

A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.

Actually I found the answer on page 36 in the " assaulting through cover " section.

I states clearly that " if any model in an assaulting unit will have to go through difficult or dangerous terrain as part of its assault move, the unit must take the relevant terrain test before moving. Remember that assaulting models must try to engage as many enemies as possible - no holding back to avoid the test! "

Unfortunately, this clarification is written on different page than the basic assault move sequence and so I didn't saw it at the time the problem occured.

I dont believe my opponent was trying to cheat though. The book is very big and difficult to understand and so , many players never really learn the correct rules and are playing the game wrong.

He has to assault as many as he can. If that means he has to assault into the cover, he takes the terrain test. If his models can't make the charge, the assault fails.
