I'm currently collecting an Imperial Guard army, and I'm after some static artillery pieces I can form a gun line with. However, the Guard don't seem to have any of these, so I'm planning on using either Empire Great Cannons from the Fantasy range or Ork Kannons (with Guard models as crew). What are the best options open to me here, and how would I use the units in a game if I through with the idea?

They would probaly just 'count as' heavy weapon teams, but forge world did release rules for static emplacments and turrets in one of the IA books. (Not sure which one)

Currently debating whether to study for my exams or paint some Deathwing

You could always count them as a basilisk (the models might need to be bigger, though) and just not move it?

I thought about using Ork Lobbas in the same way as Mortar teams, but I'm wanting to stay as faithful to the rules as possible in case I ever decide to use the army in Games Workshop or whatever. I'm after a unique looking force with a complete absence of armoured vehicles that still abides by GW rules and still has a Heavy Support section.

You can use the Forge World Death Korps of Krieg artillery pieces, which are on wheels, but are generally static unless towed. You could use those models and run them as basilisks (I don't think anyone would mind, unless you're playing TFG).

Alternatively, for friendly and fluffy games, you could use the Death Korps Siege Army List which lets you take static artillery pieces: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Downloads/Product/PDF/k/kreig.pdf

The models are $$$ but they're unbelievably sexy.

Looked at Forge World's website and they do indeed have some awesome stuff. I've never seen Forge World models in store though, so I assume they're only available online?

FW stuff needs to be bought from Forge World - you won't find it anywhere else.

As for rules, IA1-update is downloadable and has the rules for some of the platforms.

The remaining platforms and the wheeled artillery you will find in IA-Apoc2.

Note that some pieces are not available to be selected for a codex Guard army, even if you're using IA rules - they are only for the DKoK list (which is also downloadable).

Other than Warhammer World, you mean?
Or some stores which will order the stuff for you and hold it for you to pick up?

i haven't seen any GWS carry FW stuff but i have seen some hobby stors that carry 40k stuff will sometimes carry FW stuff...but it's pretty rare because of how expensive the stuff is. I did see the FW Tau broadside in one hobby store though.

Seeing as I already have a Cadian-based force, I think I'll shelf the idea and stick with tanks for my Guard. Thanks for the info, all.

Forge world is great for IG. Using proxies for artillery is usually widely accepted even in WYSIWYG communities, especially if it looks cool.
