With the new price increase from GW I 'm considering bailing from the game (well, just not buying any new models, Ill still play ) and getting into a new category. So I thought I would make a thread where people talk about other war games people can play. I Can't say anything because I don't play any other one, but would be interested in what other people write about. So suggest other games you play!
|
You're not playing the game like I play it...why aren't you playing the game like I play it?! O_O |

Just because I don't need to buy any more new stuff from GW, doesn't stop me from playing games with what I DO have.
The tournament scene here is already moving away from "entirely" GW models (or even majority GW models), and I long for the day when they'll have a prize for "Best xxxx army NOT using GW products for 40k or WHFB.
Then again, I've ALWAYS had another game on the burner that wasn't a GW game. This time it's Infinity. In the past, it has been Warzone, Full thrust, Stargrunt, Battletech, and a host of others.
When the day comes that I do stop playing 40k, there WILL be another set of rules that will let me play games with what I have (humans are humans, power armour is power armour, tracked armour is a tank, etc) like Tomorrow's War, so I'm not concerned.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.
That is not dead which can eternal lie ...
... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

Yeah, I wont stop playing warhammer, thats for sure I just very rarely buy from them again (if at all!)But I need something to keep my busy with painting since I rarely play, so I made this thread so people can say which game they like hobby and game wise. How good are infinity rules btw?

Infinity rules are great, the only downside is the amount of terrain required to make the game effective. You need slot or else it becomes a shooting gallery

Skirmish level for the most part, can easily scale up and down in model count. Games go quick, easy to learn the basics, and a low entry cost.

I dunno if I could invest myself in another game. The time and money required is significant. And since time = money, you'd better really damn well like the game.
Malifaux...it's a card game. Warmachine, card game. I don't like card games.
But maybe they're really good and I just need to give them a try. The problem is that significant investment of time and money into painting an army to my satisfaction--which could be months--to determine if I like the game or not.
I don't like to play miniatures games with unpainted miniatures, which is tough since you can't determine right away if you'll actually enjoy *playing* the game or not.
Sometimes I think I simply enjoy the craft and artistry of painting far more than the competitive (and often ugly) side of gaming.
I've got tons and tons of Japanese mecha models to satisfy that urge.
Play Minecraft instead!

They aren't card games, Malifaux utilizes cards instead of dice as different way to randomize action, and some suits trigger actions, but the models themselves have the special rules. War machine just uses cards to show the stats and wounds of units, and is mainly a 2d6 system

Ahh, I thought these games were like Magic where you had to spend tons of dough on the most powerful cards in order to win.

Oh no, they do kind of focus on building combos in your turn to smash your opponent as certain units buff others so it's all about order activation and strategy denial

Not at all, Cave. I have to second Malifaux, it's a great game I have lots of fun.

"Orkses never lost a battle. If we win we win, if we die we die fighting so it don't count. If we runs for it we don't die neither, cos we can come back for annuver go, see!"
I dig how in a setting where giant, muscled fungus men ride Mad Max cars and use their own teeth as currency, the concept of little engineering dudes with beards was considered a step too far down the aisle of silliness. ADB |

Also going to say Malifaux is a nice game, there's also a pretty nice variety of themes between all the crews available.
Though I miss dice so time to get a better start on Warmachine/Hordes as well.

Malifaux
These are just the ones I have some experience of. There are a bazillion more out there. Get your lazy butt out there and find some you like.
Best way to try before you buy is to find a decent forum that talks about such things - Dakka has multiple non-GW games forums so go dig around in them. Warseer has too and they are usually a lot more interesting and informative than the GW-focused sections. Other good forums are the Lead Adventure Forum, and if you have a strong stomach and don't mind the odd naked lady and/or profanity spattering your gaming talk there is Frothersunite. Also, Blogs. The Tabletop Gaming News website posts up lots of news of various toy soldier games which should give you lots of leads, and they manage a Blog ring too.
Failing that, Google is your friend!

It looks like many people are thinking along the same lines. I posted a similar thread just a few hours after the OP (I just did not see it)
There are lots of other great games. Here is a list of a few of the current ones. I am particularly fond of Atomic Cafe 1957, which not only is really cool, but is very inexpensive as well.
Anima Tactics
Atomic Cafe 1957
Avatars of War DeathMatch
Battletech
Dystopian Wars
Flames of War
HeavyGear Arena and Heavy Gear Blitz
Hell Dorado
Infinity
Kings of War
Malifaux
MERCs
War Gods of Aegyptus
Warlord by Reaper

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k. Rule #1 - BBAP
