Subject: A question about vehicle explosions

I had a rules disagreement a couple of weeks ago and I was hoping to get some clarity on the situation.
A group of Lootaz shoot at a Rhino.
I get a number of penetrating hits.
Three 6's are rolled in addition to a few other results on the penetrating hit table.
Do I roll 1d6 to determine explosion distance, or 3d6 and take to highest?
The rules are not clear and I was hoping that someone would have an idea how this should be played.

You only ever roll once for distance, also just in case you would, only roll once for damage to the passenger's/units caught in explosions.

I absolutely agree on the damage to passengers and units caught in the explosion, but where is the justification in rolling only once for distance?

The vehicle can't explode more than once just like it can't be wrecked more than once.
As soon as you have rolled the distance for one explosion, that's the end of the vehicle. Think of it like scoring 3 unsaved wounds on a 1 wound model. 1 wound kills it, while the other 2 do nothing

I would have done the 3 and taken the highest but thats for friendly games only. Bigger explosions are more fun!
I always saw this as analogous to rolling multiple dice for running. You only run once but you can have more than 1 chance at moving further.
