I am a beginner but really I almost fully grasp the rules, and what I don't understand I look up online or come here. So I had one question, and that is if I have a small piece of terrain like a tank barrier that comes up to about the waist of my space marines that are a couple inches away from it and they fire over it at a unit also a couple inches away from it does the unit being fired upon get a cover save? It would also be great if you could explain any other commonly misunderstood rules as far as cover saves and terrain go.

Thank you very much,

Under the couch

It's all down to LOS from the models firing.

If their target is partly obscured by the barrier, they get a cover save.

There's no definitive answer that we can give you here... you would need to look at the position of the models when it arises.

40k uses what is called True Line of Sight, or TLOS.

If, in the situation given above, the models that were being shot at had any part of the model blocked my intervening terrain or models, and 50% or more of the unit is blocked in this way, then the entire unit receives a cover save.

The cover save chart is on page 21.

It is not uncommon for models right next to a barricade or low wall to be able to see over and shoot people clearly with no cover in the way but able to claim cover in return.

That is what you get when hiding behind a wall like that.

Standing farther back usually results in mutual cover... But TLOS means 'get down and look!'
