Kitbashing works well for Vanguard Vets. Distinctly painted C:SM assault squad with bits from the C:SM commander set, the new Power Armored Grey Knights Set, or the black templar upgrade kit.

I'm using:
GK Mk VIII bodies
CSM Bezerker legs
GK Falchions (Hand swapped with SW chainsword arms)
SW bolt pistol arms.
Bare heads, mostly from the Wolf Pack box.
Everything else is standard.

Black Templar Upgrade is a great deal.
You get a bunch of weapons some good armour pieces and that nice knight-esque helmet. You also get a Mk IV helmet.

It's worth it... the squad is part of a force that has been fighting continuously for 200 years. Their background is that they were a regular assault squad but ended up having to loot CSM corpses for armour pieces and after finding an abandoned Loyalist armoury they loaded up on tasty weapons and armour.

The weapons would make a good touch IMO.

i run salamanders useing basic marine bodies. however, for my sternguard, i used the space wolves pack and the shoulder pad kit for the bloodletters. gives them a seperate look from the rest of the army. my vanguard vets, i used death company kits. had to do a fair ammount of scraping some icons off and did some kitbashing with other SM kits.

look for the different shoulderpads, those work great to make a squad stand out.

I differentiate all my squads by jump pack, the Vanguard Vets get the over the top ones to make the Heroic Intervention moves. (I'll even get them painted one of these days)

Wow that looks awesome. I really want to see what they will look like painted. Are they gonna be red or gold?

For Vanguard Vets I'm going to be using a mix of the actual metal models with mostly Death Company. Death Company comes with a lot of pieces that are highly ornamented and if you play BA its very easy to just cover up the Red x's all over the DC troops and just paint them red or whatever color you wish to paint them. This is what I plan to do once I stop collecting Assault Marines. (Only one more box!) The Blood drops on the unit actually make sense on Blood Angels. If you are planning on doing it for Space Marines then maybe Death Company with some normal Assault Marines will do it for you?
