Last week i played an Eldar army with my chaos marines.

he used units of dire avengers and firedragons in waveserpents/falcons, with some jetbikes,
there were so many scatterlasers and shuriken cannons that my light vehicles were stripped and there are are so many guns woulnding on 2s that i was forced into lots of saves (obviously failing about 1/3rd of them)

that hurt me a lot more than any low ap eldar have done. and was so mobile, comfortable loss.

As an Eldar player, I agree with Ajroo that soaking them in low AP fire is the way to do it. Most marine vehicles are lightly armoured and Fire Dragons can deal with the rest. I use DAs and FDs almost exclusively - I've even tied up and eventually destroyed a Terminator Assault Squad with a Reclusiarch and Snaguinary Priest in tow with a Dire Avenger Fortune/Doom/Shimmershield combo. It's a brilliant tarpit. You can also herd your opponent quite well with Wraithlords - he will not come within assault range voluntarily without a powerfist at hand, allowing you to disembark and Bladestorm/Dragon-nuke more effectively safely (edited for comepletely incorrect term - the greatest weakness of Eldar are their fragility, and Wraithlords are the exception).

I'm a huge fan of Farseer/Bike/Fortune with basic witchblade as a second HQ. It's a brilliant support vehicle-/dreadnought-hunter that people really don't expect. My regular opponents actually run the hell away from my solo Jetseer.

This is more of a Tactics article so far, but rather than report it, I'll post an list example list for the above!

I used this concept of high-ROF weapons con at a tournament last year and left with a gold cup-shaped thing. One Farseer considerably buffs the Vypers or Falcon to annihilate small vehicles or small HWTs with ease. The other 'tactical farseer' buffs with Doom+Guide ensuring that light arms fire will do a lot of damage. The tac-seer can keep his vehicle in range of the Wraithlord vanguard protecting their effectiveness from Wraithsight. The Runes of Warding are actually probably best left on the other seer. :(

Farseer 145
Runes of Witnessing, Runes of Warding, Spirit Stones, Doom, Guide
Farseer 75
Guide

10 Dire Avengers incl. Exarch 157
Bladestorm, Diresword/Pistol
Wave Serpent: Linked Shuriken Cannons, Spirit Stones 110

10 Dire Avengers incl. Exarch 152
Bladestorm, Dual Avenger Catapults
Wave Serpent: Linked Shuriken Cannons, Spirit Stones 110

5 Dire Avengers 60

10 Guardians w/ Scatter Laser Platform 95

6 Fire Dragons incl. Exarch 96
Crack Shot, Dragon's Breath Flamer
Wave Serpent: Linked Eldar Missile Launchers, Spirit Stones 120

3 Vyper Jetbikes 210
Scatter Lasers and Shuriken Cannon upgrades

Wraithlord 115

Wraithlord 115

Against MeQs your game plan for Banshees really depends on whether or not you can pull Doom off on your intended targets - but the real difficulty is in getting them into combat. If Eldar had an assault vehicle I swear I would never need to play another army!

I have had great success against Blood Angels with a foot slogging Eldar army with a Avatar, Farseer, 3 Wraithlords, Harlequins and scatter lasers on Guardians with as many Spirit Seer upgrades on as many Warlocks I can get. Though this is more my focus than mech Eldar, I will give you my advice...

Banshees are good, but they don't have a good delivery system as you can't move the serpent and then deploy and assault. Read the disembarking rules in the BRB, pg 67. These rules also apply to Fire Dragons since there are no fire ports on a Wave Serpent.

Shining Spears are better anti-Marine units then Banshees IMO. They are mounted on Jetbikes, have a 6" Str 6 ranged attack, 3+ armor save with Toughness 4, and have Str 6 power weapons on the charge. They are expensive though... a base squad of 5 is 175pts. 5 Banshees is 80pts, but if you put them in a Serpent they are now 170pts... the difference is now less noticeable, though there are pros and cons for each.

Yeah, facing marines you really have 2 shooting options... either you overwhelm them with shear volume of fire or you focus on alot of low AP weapons and/or weapons that ignore armor all together.

You /can/ melee them... as Harlequins, Banshees, Scorpions, Spears, and even Storm Guardians can be used with various tactics and degrees of success (and probably in that order I listed as best to worse). You would then have to focus on the melee aspect and use your mobility and Fleet to get you into melee as soon as you can. Obviously you want to charge them, but due to alot of your big melee units having a high Init, you can really take the teeth out of a charge on you by still attacking first. What kills Eldar assaults is the lack of staying power... You really don't want to get tar pitted down to allow other units to charge you while your already in combat. On the other hand, this can be a better tactic for you, as you have a few units (Banshees and Spears) that are all about getting in on that charge, so following up a charge by one unit or multiple charging the same unit should allow you to kill your foes faster.

Do not discount Wraithlords... they are Toughness 8 and ignore armor in CC. I honestly like to put swords on them so when I do get in melee, I hit more often with those precious 2 attacks. The standard of adding 2 different heavy weapons to them is also a good one, as a Bright Lance for AV 12+ Vehicles with BS4 is an excellent option, and the Eldar ML is also an excellent weapon. In any list these can be great options, even the centerpiece to build a list around. I run my three wraithlords with swords and 1 BL and 2 ML to pop transports or high AV targets.

These tactics do not even touch on psychic powers, as even a Storm Guardian squad will do well with Fortune against a Doomed enemy. So if you build a list, do not discount your psyker advantage.

With this in mind, put up a more defined list and we may be able to further help you.

Good luck and I hope this gives you food for thought!
