So who all else agrees that GW likes screwing its customer over by letting you take special weapons and such but never putting those weapons in their boxes?

Aka - no plasma or melta in Guardsmen boxes, no flamers, meltas, or plasma in the assault marine box, etc.

That's annoying. Looks like ASM melta spam is going to be a pain if I ever do go back to 40K.

I run the FW Death Korp models and forge world has "upgrade packs" which have 2 of each special weapon in them. Its more money but its the only way I've found to get those all important plasma guns!

GW does sell plasma and meltaguns in packs of 5, but they're metal and they seem expensive.

No meltaguns in SW pack boxes if crazy annoying. Granted for every SW box I buy, I buy a Tactical box as well to combine, I am still short meltaguns.

Best bet is to also pick up the SW accessory sprue that has another MG on it.

well i do necrons so i cannot really comment as i have no weapon upgrade options anyway.

I don't work with dollars on a regular basis, so my bad. Seem like a good deal now that I look at other bits sites.

For a lot of this, it's because some kits are older and don't have room for the options - the old Catachan kit only has options for a vox caster and a flamer. The Cadian kit has a flamer and grenade launcher, and the sprue is pretty packed for one its age. Guard players should be swimming in command squad sprues anyway, just for the crazy amount of customization they can pull off with it. I can understand that if you're going for lots of vets or special weapon squads you can run out fast though.

My personal favorite gripe related to this one (and one far less reasonable) is the idea that GW should sell half a dozen different devastator squad sets with 4 of any given heavy weapon. A lot of people want to spam missile launchers and they're stubborn about this idea.

Plasmas and Meltas are easy to get. The pack from mail order fits marines fine and can be easily modified to fit cadians (GL or FL arms)

Well, the re-released the Cadian and Catachan infantry boxes about two years ago with the same special weapons options. I was a sad IG player.

Glad I could help then! When I started up BA and I saw that plastic meltaguns were 5 bucks I instantly went to see if there was a way to get them cheaper. I'm rather glad GW makes them.
