Couple of questions:

Purple sun hits a hydra and its two beastmasters. Who all makes initiative test? Is it 3 separate test or 1 test for the whole group?


If you use a direct damage spell on a warmachine? Does it only target one crew member or the entire group?


Purple sun hits a cold one chariot. Does it go off the riders initiative or the chariots?

Do vortex give look our sir's?

I would say you test using the Hydra's Initiative only (so just one test). From the FAQ 'Q: If a Monsters and Handlers unit is required to take a characteristic test, which values can you use? A: You can only use the monsters characteristics; the Handlers are ignored for this purpose'

I would say you target the warmachine directly, the crew members are only used as wound counters of sorts.

Chariots do not have an initiative score

From the FAQ 'Q: Does the Look Out Sir special rule apply against all spells that use templates? A: Yes.'

Handlers and crew models aren't "real" models - they are simply wound markers or counters.

So in the case of the hydra it is one test on the hydras init, you wound the warmachine with the warmachines toughness etc.

When you have one model you always use the best available characteristic, so the Chariot would use the DE riders init.
