So I was looking up on Lexicanicum for information for creating some story for 40k, and I come across this little tidbit...which blew my frakkin mind. I got it from here:

http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Xenology

The quote is:

"Inquisitor Ralei - Radical who started the Xeno research, later found out to be a Necron Lord"

......WHAT?!

Ok, as those who know me might be able to tell, I'm fairly into the Necrons. I don't know of much else on them 'sides what's in the Necron codex, though, but this line in and of itself seems to open up a huge door of possibilities for Necron lore, for me. What do you guys know about this Inquisitor Ralei? Did he ever speak? Why was he doing the research? Were his goals met? And most importantly, HOW could a Necron Lord impersonate a human?!?!

I'm creating a bit of an online lore/DoW2-based campaign for friends (one of them already has done so for the rest of us), so I'd love to know about this. Does anyone know anything about Inquisitor Ralei or, more importantly, how a Necron Lord is able to do this???

It isn't "fluff" - it's lore.

The C'Tan deciever, sounds like something his 'crons would do. The 'cron fluff is kinda all over the place atm, but I would put my bets on it being one of the decievers necrons that done did it.

I guess anything's possible with him, isn't it...that's just plain glorious. And he's all over the place, right? I can use him without stepping over any sort of bounds you think? The Deceiver probably is in more places than one at any given time anyway, I suppose...

But anyone else have any more? I don't have the time/money/ability to get and read that book right now, but I'd absolutely love to hear from someone who read the book (or more folks that have, if winnertakesall has). Anyone?

Alas, I do not have it anymore, having only borrowed it briefly from a cousin. The Deciever, hence the name really, I think is the only one really capable, it's in his nature really. Like the Nightbringer enjoys fear.

Which is awesome I say, the Deceiver's name seems to bely far, FAR more than just Deceiving, though. More than likely, this Necron Lord was truly given life, from the sound of it. Likely his mind was quite fully restored then, imprinted with a new sort of memory which he used to fullfill his function. But to get inside that mind...now that is interesting as all the Warp, no?

The Deceiver doesn't seem to lead a tombworld...
He also plays factions against each other for fun... or his approximation of fun.

if I remember correctly
Spoiler:
the false inquisitor fakes his (its? With Necrons you never know...) death/disappearence so that his puritan rivals send Sashem (I don't remember if he is an inquisitor or still an interrogator) to investigate and destroy a secret research facility sponsored by Ralei, to find proofs of his heresy. Here the puritan fins a laboratory, controlled only by an AdMech Magos (whose mind has long gone over the edge), dedicated to the study of xeno species. Sashem is convinced by the magos not to immediately destroy the facility, giving him some time to complete his researches of weaknesses in the xenos (Q'orl, Umbrae, thyrrus, tau, eldar, kroot, orks and various tyranid species) for the Imperium to exploit. So, The inquisitor orders him to execute and vivisect his own "treasures" (which complete the distruction of the already fragile mind of the Magos). After various, growingly menacing and disturbing events (including the gruesome deaths of the puritan's acolites, tyranids on the loose, the magos continously babbling about someone or something "silent and perfect" residing in an empty cell, pitchforks and torches Frankenstein-style uprising of the local miners, rebelling machines, strange messages, communication breakdowns and the like), as an inquisitorial cadre arrives to wipe out evrything (including Sashem, accused of being an heretic himself), Ralei (if I remember correctly, as the conclusion of the book is left open to the reader's interpretation) appears again, showinghis true colours (again, that is what you can infer): the true objective of the facility is not only that of discovering the weak points in xeno races, but that of humanity too. Which, Ralei concludes, is their inquisitiveness (which, being Sashem an inquisitor, is quite ironic) and greed of knowledge, that makes them the race most easily bended to other's will. Then the scene fades to the final report of the second inquisitorial team, one photo of which shows the blurred image of a very necron-like vehicle leaving the ruins of the facility as they are being obliterated from orbit, leaving the reader to wonder about the fate of the poor (and let me tell you, completely idiotic) inquisitor (probably not bro-fisting the 'crons a-la Blood Angels, I suppose...).

LastCameTheRaven - thank you a ton! Apparently they weren't at all clear about a lot of my questions in the book, but heck, it must be possible to do that to a Necron Lord because Black Library books are all supposed to be canon, right?

Not entirely, as the BL books are written by different people, and thus have some inconsistencies between them, between individuals, times and places of events, and technological level of the Imperium (and other factions).

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Lost in Warp... again

Spoiler:
I've read the book and my impression was that the whole research station was a FRICKIN MONOLITH!! Inquisitor Ralei / the Necron Lord returns and lifts off. I forget if it phases out or just ignores the lance blasts from the orbiting Black Ship, but it leaves with the ex-Puritan Inquisitor on board.

As to how he impersonated a human, the impression I got was he "put on" a skin, much like a flayed one, but neater.
