I would say either Crisis suits or Broadsides. Broadsides bring our best weapon to the fight but Crisis suits are much more versatile and manoeuvrable. However in higher point games you're going to need pathfinders to make shooting more reliable, and you can't forget about vehicles too.

I'll toss in for the crisis suits. They got power armour, can deep strike, and are one of the few ways tau can veils special weapons. Though it's been my experience that no one tau unit will win the game, tau units need to work together to get the job done or at least to make the most of them.

Crisis Suits. I bloody hate them! All that JSJ shenanigans!
Seriously though, they can be REALLY effective.

The Emperor doesn't have a GKs unshakable faith in the Emperor which is....basically himself?

Crisis Suits without a doubt BUT don't underestimate Kroot.

In my last game I had two units of 10 Kroot + 5 Hounds both outflanking.

I took out a Devastator Squad that was camping and then ate a 9 Man Tac squad afterwards in the next turn!!! Pure quality. The Hounds going first ensure at least 1/2 Marines will die before hitting you back.

They are great cheap speed bumps too.

Kroot can be used well.
Crisis suits are 'da bomb' as it were.
My vote goes to Broadsides however.
They can crack with ease what most armies simply ignore: The Monolth.

Broadsides, must be one of the most reliable high AV tank killing units in the game. As purplefood said, they can kill Monoliths.....Relatively easily compared to most other armies options.

Whilst they are a high priority target, i never really worry too much about my brothers Broadsides. They are legends at rolling to hit, but SOOOOO many 1's on wounds! That's just him though...

Crisis suits without a doubt. 3+ save, JSJ, weapon flexibility unmatched by anything else in the game. They are the starch that holds the Tau together as their codex ages.

This thread is rather pointless, to be honest. It's either Broadsides or Crisis suits, I would prefer Crisis suits because they have a use outside of AT.

Broadsides supported by Kroot and Stealthsuits. But definely Broadsides are the best unit.

Eastern Frontier Exploratores
224th Astra Legion (main army)
628th Praetorian Guard Cohort (wife's army)
827th Auxilia Cohort (ad mech fun)
825th Foderati Cohort (in the beginning army)

Crisis suits are probably the 'best', if there is such a thing. Mainly just because they are the workhorse of the army.

Broadsides are also excellent, and are the 'best' at their job, but their job isn't as encompassing as the Crisis is.

Vespid are horrid.

Stealthsuits are good for chopping up and using bitz to make Crisis look better, but thats about it.

Kroot have uses and fill an important role in the army.

Firewarriors are good for scoring, but are a bit too squishy to be relied on for dealing out damage.

Pathfinders... well I wish they were great. The idea behind Markerlights is great, but Pathfinders are too squishy to be reliable. Any opponent that isn't a moron will easily take them out on turn one to cripple your army.

I'll go for broadsides. 2 of them on the battlefield can create a huge radius of AT, and they are a huge pain to kill with a 2+ save.

Kroot are a tad ineffective, if you ask me. They are meant to be a counterassault unit, but with rapid fire weapons they arent that great in close range shooting, and they can get pommeled badly in CC. They can be great at holding objectives, but then again, so are Eldar Guradians. I think in the next dex, they need assault weapons and at least some sort armor save.
