This weekend I was playing against my friend's Dark Angels list. He had a company master (or whatever it is called) and his special rule lets all squads on the battlefield use his leadership. However, I was playing guard and my psykers successfully used weaken resolve on one of his squads, that I then reduced by more than 25%. So the question arose, Does the squad still take the - Ld modifier. Because the attack reduced their Ld, but they use the company master's Leadership, which was technically unaffected.

The effect (Rites of Battle maybe?) replaces the base ld value of a unit, it does not enable the unit to ignore negative modifiers. Example...

I lose combat by 2, due to the replacement effect I test on ld 10, but am at -2 in combat so I test on 8.

ah, that is what I thought, however the rule did not clearly state that the units Ld was replaced. thank you for the help.

If it said 'the unit can test on this ones unmodified leadership' then he would be right. For example, Sisters of Battle have a piece of wargear that allows this.

The thing is my company master was un-effected by the psykers so still had a Ld10 where my squad that was attacked had the negative modifier. So taking the Ld test I used the company masters according the Rites of battle Special rule. ( If a company master is on the field all DA units may take Ld, Pinning, and morale test off of the Company master's Ld)

Yes, you take it on his Ld, but you still use modifiers. His Ld was 10, so take it on 10, but the squad taking it was affected by a modifier, so 10 + modifier is the number you test on, instead of the normal 8 or 9 + modifier that it would have been without that rule.

Weaken Resolve does NOT modify LD tests, which is a common misconception. It modifies the LD stat of the unit.

Therefore, You can weaken resolve a unit to LD 2; however, if that unit uses another's LD as per Rites of Battle, they now test on the other unit's LD 10, rather than their own LD 2.

Agreed. Weaken Resolve on a unit that is using the Company Master's Ld effectively does nothing.

On a different note, if they weaken reselve on the Company Master then they probably have no need to use his
