Hi all.

Im not that good with forums and hope that i havn't put this in the wrong area. Basicly i have been playing 40k for about 6 months now and i have a pretty solid ork list. Im getting tired of painting the green though so im looking into starting a Space Wolves army and i have no idea where to start as they are so different to orks. I have picked up the codex and its just made it even more complicated. Im planning on building a strong tourney list as i will be entering a fair few tournaments with them once they are completed i've looked at alot of lists on the web but i still have no understanding how to build a decent tourney list. so far this is what i know. ( think i know )

Long fangs are good and i was thinking 2 squads of 5 long fangs with missile launchers and a predator filled with lascannons as my heavy.

.... ok thats about it lol. the main things im interested in finding out is ...

should i defiantly take rhinos with my grey hunters

how many grey hunters should i put in each squad and how many is "enough" for the army

what and how should i kit out my hq's and elites. im not looking for someone to do me an army list. just to give me some helpful advice . sorry for rambling on so if you havnt already clicked the back button and you have some tips id be greatful to read them!

Nah you placed it right.
Long Fangs with missile launchers are one of the best options for the SW codex (Though a bit unimaginative)
Grey Hunters are a solid troops choice and a rhino is a very good idea for them. Opinions vary but a good build is usually
9 Grey Hunters
Meltagun
Mark of the Wulfen
Wolf Standard
Then add in a Wolf Guard Pack leader with a power fist and combi-melta
Bundle them into a rhino and you're done.

HQs are interesting...
Rune Priests make very good support HQs and add psychic defense to your army.
Wolf Lords can be very good, take them with a unit of Wolf Guard terminators in a Land Raider and you should have plenty of fun.

ELites
Wolf Guard should be used both as pack leaders (adding them to a squad of Grey Hunters) and as a bodyguard for your HQ (Wolf Lord or other)
Wolf Scouts are very good choices. Take them cheap (add a meltagun and maybe some power weapons) and outflank them to destroy any targets of opportunity.

so would i defiantly want to take the max amount of grey hunters in a rhino? i was thinking possibly 7 in each and try to get more ( for more rhinos speeding around ).

i was unsure about using the wolf guard because i dont really see how effective they can be for there points cost when joining a unit. but thats probably just me being new. i like the land raider idea though.

i was thinking of something like rhinos with grey hunters in. 2 drop pods, 1 with wolf guard kitted out to the max and 1 with a dreadnought in, could that ever be competative ? ( obviously with other things though )

If you go drop pods the entire army is best suited to doing it otherwise your army ends up too split up.
The Wolf Guard Pack Leader gives the unit a better LD and also adds in a cheaper powerfist as well as packing a combi-melta.
7 isn't really a great number. Take either 9+Wolf Guard pack leader or 5 in a Razorback of some description.

thanks for the tips, ill have a good look and try to put a list together tonight. i think i'll probably struggle to get the list to tourney level but i'll have to keep working with it . one more thing though. whatwould be the bonus of takeing 5 in a razorback compared to 5 in a rhino ( apart from the vehicle differences).

Purely for the Razor spam...
6 GH squads each with a special and mounted in a Razorback puts 6 fairly cheap AV12 hulls on the table for a very low price. It's a cheesy tactic but an effective one to date.
You can also take a Wolf Guard Pack Leader with each squad since Razorbacks seat 6.
I would advise against (personally) this since it won't make your army very fun to fight against... though it will be fairly competetive.

well im definatly going for the most competitive listi can get, i probably wouldnt spam it though because i can imagine it will have alot of weaknesses against some armies.

The most competetive?
Fair enough, it doesn't have many weaknesses against an all comers army but i have a feeling that GK and DE have easier counters against it than other armies might...

When it comes to Rune Priests, they work very well using a combo of any of their three best moves imho

Murderous Hurricane
Jaws of the World Wolf
Living Lightning

read up on those three and pick the two coolest ;p
and on a side note... if you give your RP a wolf tail talisman he can provide the GH squad he bunks with an extra layer of protection against psychic shooting attacks. Also keep in mind that a RP in a rhino is great because the RP can pop up through the fire port and snipe with living lightning a VERY fun tactic that my two rune priests use rather frequently

thanks for the rune priest tips, will be having a look at that. What do you think about the rest of the list, have i got too many troops? would i be better having maybe 25 troops ( 2 sets of 10 in rhino and 1 set of 5 in a razorback ) to include more fastattack and possibly a lascannon predator?

I don't play SW, but playing against them, I have learn to hate Blood Claws. Don't think there's much room to go wrong there...just my two cents...

Blood Claws aren't particularly good.
They do best, however, in an LRC with a Wolf Priest.

I've never seen them WITHOUT LRC and Wolf Priest.

That's what makes them good...
GH are good at close up shooting and recieving a charge.
Blood Claws need a Wolf Priest and LRC to make them good. Admittedly the wreck a lot of faces when they do get that good but if they don't get it they simply aren't that good...
