I don't play fantasy, nor do I really want to, but I can't resist Vampire Counts any more! I was looking for a competent replacement for a haemonculi, and I stumbled upon konrad van carstein, and I was blown away. The quality of the troops, and the special characters is just great. I play chaos marines, so having an army that's different and exotic really appeals to me. However.... I don't want to play fantasy... In the least.

Should I get into fantasy, or should I just build a trophy army?

If the game isn't fun for you, don't play it. However, I think the game is very much fun, play it sort of obsessively, and recommend it. 8th is much better than 7th (although vampires are only marginally competitive under the new ruleset).

I'm starting vamps shortly and I'm not even slightly sorry

I personally think that fantasy is way more fun then 40k. However, if you don't want to play fantasy but can't resist the models, start up a trophy army and if for whatever reason you decide that you do want to play, you would have an army waiting for you.

I recommend both Fantasy and VC, although I also like the deamon models a lot the VC are fun as hell to play!
I just started like 3-4 weeks ago and I've gotten about ten games in and I really like it.

My favorite part is the look on my opponents face when he killed 10-15 ghouls and I bring back around 20 next turn

Slowly build a trophy army. Not only will it give you an army when you eventually want to get into fantasy, but you'll have a long time to paint and convert, so you should have a pretty good looking army.

I've been wanting to play fantasy for a long time now, but found the cost of entry to be prohibitivley high (your looking at a whole bucket load of money just for core units), however, if your not rushed and just want a trophy army, you'll one day find yourself with an army thats of a size enough to play and you may just be interested in playing!

I'm finally starting a Vampire Counts army myself next month, as i found an alternative and cost-effective solution to my core units problem

Years of experimentation brought the goblins no closer to planting a sausage tree...

That's what Battalions are for. Fantasy battalions are far better value than 40k battleforces. Take the VC box - you effectively get 2 boxes of skeletons, a corpse cart, a box of ghouls and a box of zombies, for $45us less than buying them separately.

A VC Battalion, an extra skeleton box and a box or two of Grave Guard is a good start to a VC army. That said, VC are one of the more expensive Fantasy armies since you'll need extras of the units you want to raise.
