Hey Dakkites!
So, two and a half months ago I bought a starter kit of 5 marines. The next day, our second baby was born, and thus began the slowest WIP ever. I've since bought a proper 10 man squad and 3 scouts and got myself some more paints, but then the Gears of War 3 beta came out and it all ground to a halt. Finally, I have my first 5 marines somewhat presentable, and here they are:
Up next; chapter, company, and squad markers. I want to add some bits and bobs, and detail some things. Then the rest of the lads, or some bios on these guys, what do you guys think? Any suggestions? Comments? Questions? Cheers

Maybe in the next 4 months I'll be able to get 5 more guys painted.
I think the chainsaw bayonet might need some hazard strips on it, like the sergeant's chain sword. Keep things consistent.

I'm back, finally. Just as I was about to detail the first half of October squad, Heart of the Swarm was announced and I needed to relearn zerg for multiplayer. My excitement for that died down enough to take a few nights to paint.
In addition to the chapter, company, and squad markings I've added a bunch of ammo bags, some more purity seals and some other bits. My squad came with a banner instead of a more modest aquilla for the sergeant, so I made that into the squad's banner. Here's the group shot, more to come.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Here's Private Jerf LaDroid, sporting the rocket launcher. I added some more rockets, and a bolter pistol for personal defense.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Private Niinez Janus is charged with covering LaDroid . He's got the Umbra Ferrox bolter loaded with hellfire acid bolts in case of Tyranid attacks and the fixed bayonet for close quarters situations.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Rudolfo Brixton is October squad's designated marksman. For outstanding accuracy and medium range, Rudy has earned himself and his bolter, Charlean, an extra purity seal. Rudolfo has been licensed to use Kraken penetrator rounds for high priority targets.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Quintus Pizzaro is the most experience member of October squad and somewhat of a father figure. With his enhanced vox caster, Quintus is the communications officer of the squad and also keeps tabs on the mood of the squad members. As such, Quintus is an invaluable consultant to Sgt Ranx. Pizzaro is very protective of October squad and his chainsaw bayonet (with fresh hazzard strips!) has come to the rescue of all its members.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Finally, Sgt Django Ranx, the youngest sergeant in the history of the third company. Due to his heroic actions in the Tyrinadic Decimation of 738.M41 and a sudden need to fill command positions, Ranx was promoted to leader of October squad. Well aware of the opinion held by many in the third company that his promotion might have been given to any number of more experienced Astartes, Ranx often over compensates in his command of the squad. Although this makes Ranx appear to be power hungry at times, his first and only motivations are the safety of October squad and glory of the Sons of Orar.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I just realized that I forgot to paint the metal clasps on the ammo bags. Meh, I'll get to it later. Next up; October squad Beta and Los Bandeirantes, the three man scout team assigned to October squad. Let me know what you guys think!

Quick questions. you mention that the mariens can use different ammo types....is thsi just for fluff or are you using house rules or playing them as Sterguard?
Paint job looks really nice. Good to see a red marine army that isn't BA. Judging by the symbol i'm guessing they are an UM successor chapter?

Awesome marines. I've always been a fan of the sons of orar, and they are a very under used paint scheme. Nice work.

The quick answer, Praxiss, is fluff.
The long answer is that I don't play Warhammer. I've been playing Starcraft 2 as Terran and Zerg so I tend to picture my marines fighting Tyranids. I also wanted to try and give the bullets in the Umbra Ferrox bolter that glassy green look as if they were full of acid. It was harder than I thought, ha. I might need a gloss on there, any ideas?
I'm also a big fan of the Gear of War series which prompted me to get the bayonets in the first place. I picture the three bolters in this squad being like the three choices from the Gears 3 beta; chainsaw bayonet, retro, and singer shot with the scope. That's how Brixton became the designated marksman in my mind and I thought I'd fluff him up with ammo more suitable to that job.
I chose the Sons of Orar chapter because I didn't want to just go with Ultramarines, but I like the Roman Legion theme they have. In my head, this company of SoO are a cross between Roman culture and Conquistodors as you may have gleamed from their names. I picture their home world as very desserty, maybe recovering from some great war with a poor populous. Like a futuristic western, I guess.
The Sons of Orar armies I've seen posted here and on other sites are some of the best work I've seen, so it was a bit daunting as these are the first minis I've painted in over 25 years (read; ever). SONS of ORAR's WIP thread is amazing and a huge inspiration and SCC's Raven Guard Shadow Force Dragomir thread is what I based my squad markings on. Big huge props to those guys and thanks for your kind words!
