I can't help but notice there is a lot of hate, flaming etc on gaming sites/blogs. Dakka is pretty good about keeping the flaming in line but BoLS, Strictly Average, Capture and Control, BoK, and YTTH has some immense amounts of hate/flaming. Some of it is even anonymous like in the case of the most recent article on C&C about pinning
http://www.captureandcontrol.com/2011/05/40k-strategy-win-games-of-capture-and.html
Or on BoLS most recent Wargames Gallery and battle report.

http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2011/05/40k-battle-report-horus-heresy-sons-of.html

Is it just the anonymity of the net at work or is our community particularly prone to this sort of thing? Too much nerd rage maybe!?

No, the OP is talking more about blog comments than anything anti-GW in general.

What are the typical standards of housekeeping and etiquette on these other sites?

I don't think its anything unique to our community, or nearly as widespread as it may to seem. The anonymity of the internet makes everyone a badass expert at whatever they have an opinion about, regardless of it being another hobby, sports, politics, etc.

Also, the thing with most blogs is that there is little to no moderation(from what I can tell), thereby allowing a more toxic environment. Some blogs even start for this particular reason, so that the blogger and its affiliates can vent in a way of their choosing.

No, I understand GW hate. I don't get why people jump all over people who are just trying to help us know what's going on in the gaming world or share tactics/ideas. Goatboy from BoLS, Brent on Strictly Average and BoLS, and Overwatch on C&C seem to get extraordinary amounts of flaming for just sharing their thoughts with us. What I don't get is why,

Well, I visit BoLS a lot.

With the arguments I've seen and had - especially recently - on Dakka Dakka, this place is all 'tea, crumpets and monocles' compared to the BoLS comments section.

If I were to make a metaphor, imagine trying to chat to a pack of rabid, starved wolves who are convinced that eating your face in the most violent way possible is the most pleasurable thing on Earth. And their teeth are razor blades, wrapped in razor wire. Covered in fire. And fire ants, who are also on fire, which happens to make them quite perturbed. And the dialouge happens within a very large vat of acid, which the wolves are immune to. The fire ants, however, are not so lucky, and so become even more disgruntled.

Meanwhile, Goatboy pegs you with his Black Blood Wolves Goat Knights Legion's miniatures. (Just, kidding, GB. And keep those comics coming!)

This made me lol, not the fictitious internet lol but a real lol. I don't know Bryan, as you know, I catch an inordinate amount of hate on most of my articles on C&C compared to the other contributors. Even the fact my army was listed on ebay caused me comment grief.

Mesopotamia. The Kingdom Where we Secretly Reign.

Some people start blogs because they have insightful things to say about the hobby.

Some people start blogs because they want to talk about the hobby without constant noise from the "rabble."

Some people end up starting/contributing to blogs because they can't seem to deal with people on a forum in a civilized manner.

I think it's way too broad a spectrum to generalize about. There's some great blogs, there are some mediocre ones, and there are some to be avoided like the plague.

YMMV

IME most blogs are okay. If you're talking about comments, it all comes down to the level of moderation. Some blogs are established specifically because the owner doesn't want to be censored or to censor others, or because they only want to censor people who insult or disagree with them, and are happy to support hostility directed elsewhere. Any given site has to be assessed on its own merits.

When you read a blog you're reading the personal viewpoint of the owner. He may not write all the comments, but he can choose to delete ones with which he disagrees.

Unless there he has a specific principle not to moderate any comments.

If you dislike the frothing and flaming, I should simply not read those blogs.
